UNAIMED FIRE,

A military writer points out that by far the larger proportion of infantry fire is unaimed fire-that is to say, that however nunch the aim may be intended for a particular man, the cases are exceptional where the great mass of the fire strikes the particular objects at which it is aimed. The slaughter of officers at Glencoe and other battles around Ladysmith occurred when the actual charges were taking place almost to within the old distances, and were inflicted by selected men told off for that purpose.
