INDIAN. VOLUNTIERS TOX SOUTH AFRICA.
The Indian - Planters Gazette is very en- thusiastic about an Indian Contingent of M. 1. going to South Afrion, and calis on the Indian Government to follow the Ceylon example. Since our contemporary's article was written, the Indian Government has sentenced the raising of Lumsden's Horse, so the 1. P. G. ought to be happy. It says →→

We are in a position in state that there are a large number of Intian Mounted Volunteers fron corps all over India, but chiefly from the planting districts, who are anxious to he en- Follet in an Indian Contingent. An officer of the Bebar Light Horse was not lang aga busy obtaining names, but as there had been no official sanction for the formation of any such corps a number who would otherwise have come forward withheld their names. There are men in the Surina Valley, Light Horse, with the Northern Bengal Mounted Rifles and in the Assam Crops, not to mention these gallant corps, the Behar Light Horse and the Calcutta Light Horse, who would give their eyes to go were the opportunity afforded them and they would be ideal material for the work which they would be called upon to do. Good horsemen, good shots, and hard as nails, where could a general fud better men for the anduous duties of scouting and reconnaissance than this? With the whole English speaking race fired with patriotism, is to be supposed that this one
"of body · Englishmen, the Indian planters, re- presenting as they do the flower of the civilian manhood in India, can sit quiet? Ceylon's example is a good one, and what Ceylon has done surely India should be allowed to attempt. The Beylon Contingent numbers 125 men: we make the bold offer of guaranteeing Twire that number, or even three times from Indian did the authorities but sound the "assembly"
Ata time when every available mounted iman is a gain to us; at a time when we are smart- ing under a succession of reverses; at a time when it chafen every British-born subject to sit quietly at home and have no chance to strike a blow for his country; surely India,, where loyalty and partriotism are more ramp. ant than in any other possession of the British Crown, should be allowed to participate. On behalf of the vast plasting-community-and-Flores, Brd, more particularly on behalf of the Planters Frey, Miss L. E. Volunteer Corps, we make an earnest appeal | Geis, Mrs. L to the powers that be to sanction the formation | Galdınan, G.
of an Imperial Indian Light Horse Corps. Where such sanction given the difficulty would, not be to enroll men, but to make a selection from among the crowds who would at once respond to the "rally."
MORE STORIES OF GENERAL WAUCHOPE.
1
In connection with General Wauchope's devotion to his profession-he had been wounded four times, thrice severely before going to South Africa-a story is told. Shortly before he started for the Soudan in 1898 he met on a country road near Niddrie an old tinker, a character in his way, whom he had known nearly all his life. Said the itinerant: "Eh, laird, I here ye're gaun af tae the wars ance mair. Whan wull ye e'er get yer fillo fechtin'?" The officer smiled, but made no reply. The linker went on " thinkin' that'll be never laird I'm jist the same mysel, sir; I can ne'er get ma fill-but its no fecitin', it's whusky." The laid took the hint

The man shouted, "Captain, I wouldn't lay a finger on a gentle. mas like you, and a brave man as well! It's lucky for Mr. that you, are with him, Very quietly Captain Wauchope lectured the man on the absurdity of carrying a regimental grievance into civil life, and than gave him a shilling or two. That was too much for the rowdy, and he burst into tears,
