FOOTBALL IN RUSSIA.
ENGLISH, GERMANS, AND GREEKS PLAYING-
IN THE CAUCASUS.
A football club is in course of formation at Baku, the centre of the Russian oll-fields. A ready several practice games have been played, and shortly the first match is to take place. The players consist of part of the English colony (numbering under 50), a few Greeks, and Germans. The prime mover in this club is Mr. C. W. Hand, who last year was well. knowa in North London fnetball circles. This gentlemen obtained the balls from England and called the players together. The condi- tions under which the game is played would surprise most of nur readers. There is not a blude of grass for miles, and the sandy soil is pleasant to fall on. If the exceedingly pl north wind is blowing play is impossible owing to the dust getting into the player eyes. Baku must be one of the strangest football grounds in the world, whilst the Spectators (consisting of Tartars, Aumenians, and Georgians) would be in themselves an attraction on an English ground. The Georgians have a game of foot- ball of their own,
WEDDING BREAKFAST

At St. Helens, Lancashire, the other day a glass worker named Peter Cowan was married in Miss Mary Downay. Subsequently about 30 guests sat down to a wedding breakfast con: g of beef, multon, pork, and the usual ts, which had been procured from a local dealer. The following day three of the party were taken seriously ill, while a day later eight others, including the bride and bridegroom, were also attacked in a less agute form. "The sympans are those of ptomaine poisoning, the local medical officer of health is it present

English readers of Harpers Monthly_máy | Haftsinck, M. dismiss all anxiety as to the future of the famous magazine. There has been misappre- hension and even some exaggeration, bait the financial stability of the great publishing firm is as strong today as ever it was. The pro spects for 1900 are almost brighter than ever betore in the history of the house,
Such is a brief outline of the information gleaned by a representative of The Leader from the London manager of Messrs. Harper Bro. thers, and the impression gathered from a casual giance over their publishing warehouse in Albermarle-st., gives strong corroboration. Everywhere there are signs of active vitality,
The facts of the case are that the corporation which now owns the business is going through a process of "reconstruction." That is the official description of the now arrange- ments, which, however, to eyes external are not clearly distinguishable from the creation of something very much like a trust in literature, engineered under the competent guidance of Mr. Pierpont Morgan.
Mr. John Harper, whose wife died last year, is rotiring, and Mr. John Harvey, who is pro prietor of the North American Review, as well, as its editor, joins the corporation as managing director Arrangements are a
also in progress for developing the business in every direction. The prospectus of the magazine for 1950 cer- tainly seems to confirm this forecast. Mrs. Humphry Ward, Mark Twain," Rudyard Kipling, Dr. Conan Doyle, and Sir Martin Con- way are only a few of the celebrated names: which will head contributions to its pagen dur-- ing the year.
