SOUTH AFRICAN FUND ENTER- TAINMENT.

On Saturday night an entertainment was given at the Theatre Royal in aid of that South African Fund. The Theatre was packed, every available seat heing filled, many of the later arrivals and those who had not taken the precaution to book a seat in advance being obliged to stand. There were present His Excellency the. The Theatre had been decorated for the evasion, the British tag and the cusses of St. George, St. Andrew and St. Patrick being everywhere in evidence: wherever one looked there was something symbolical of Britain and even the weather made an attempt to give as a whiff of the British climate so that everything was as it should have been for a patriotic enter

Last Saturday on the Club ground at the Happy Valley, the Rugby players of the Calmy gave their help in the South African Fund and we should think that the football players, both Association and Rugby, had greatly assisted to augment this patriotic subscription. The arrange- ments last Saturday were identical with those of the previous occasion, except that the charge to the grand stands had been reduced by one half the attendance, lawwever, was not quite so large, neither stand being so well occupied as at the Association game. Per- haps the weather bad something to do with it, as the wind, blowing from off the harbour, was biuerly cold; there was no anin, however, and those who had great coats with them could view the match with comparative.comfort. His Excellency the Governor, accompanied by Mr. Hatch M., viewed the match from the Club's Grand Stand.

The game was very well, contested the English, with their national trafacity, opposing the much stronger team. As Wales, Scotland, and Ireland have some exceptionally fire players, it is not strange that England alone, should suffer defeat from the combined "World," I must he acknowledged that the delcat was not a severe one, and theganie reflected ciedu on both victors and vanquished.

ANSWER.

The Defendants admit the statements in the first second think and fourth' paragraphs of the Petition to be true.

2-in answer to the 5th paragraph of the petition the Defendants admit that the said Steamer the Activ with all the goods then Jaden on board of her were on or about the 9th November 1898 totally lost on the said inpured against but they deny that goods to voyage off the port of Tamsui by the perils the value of $44,318,34 or to anything like that value were shipped on board the said Steamer Activ at Tientsin for carriage on board of the said Steamer on her said voyage or anyhow,

The Defendants further say in answer to the said 5th paragraph that the goods shipped" on hoard of the said Steamer Activ at Tien. tsin to be carried on the said voyage were not of the value of $44,318.34 or more than $26.539.33 and were at the time of the said insurances over valued by the Plaintiffs with the intention of defrauding the Defendants.

In reply to paragraph 6 of the petition. the Defendants say that the Plaintiffs are not entitled to recover from the Defendants the said sums of $40,000 and $4,315.34 or any sum or sums and admit that they Defendants have refused to pay the same.

As the performers were all Laminerts, with the exception of Dr. Lowson who is a Lammert by adoption, it is quite superfluous to say that the selection was excellently given. The song "I swear to be good and tite," sung in parts was capitally rendered and the A.D.C. might well stage Dorothy with the help of this quintette.
