A. McKirdy....... confined to their own staff. Yesterday was no exception and being favoured with capital. H. Hance weather for the competitors, though slightly C. A. Bowley chilly for spectators, the ninth annual meeting was in every way a complete success. The but not elaborately

were tastefully greater considera-

aled, comfort tion than mere spectacular effect. A commio- dious stand was provided for ladies and these who found the long hours of standing irksome, a matshed was also erected for the convenience of the Hongkong Regiment Band which played dining the afternoon, while for the thirsty, a well stocked bar was open and was well appreciated. Enjoyment for the youngsters was also considered, swings, seesaws -And others youthful joys being in evidence; nor was the "Missus and Kids Fund for gotten, everyone taking a programme sa placed on the table beside them a box with a placard asking payment, at any rate chosen by the purchaser, for the benefit of the Fund. We are not able to say how much was collected but the amount anust form a nice little donation, ns there were during the afternnon quite, if not over, a thousand European spectators, besides a great number of Chinese.

The sport was goed; the fields not being large the competition was keener, especially in the bicycle races. Mr. Mckirdy took part in all; he vede exceptionally well but un successfully, he having so thoroughly establish ed his manie ás a cyclist that he must now ex- pect to be heavily penalized; the handicapping, however, was fair throughout and has undoubt edly brought out sonte new athletes, notably T. Shand, the winner of the hampion Cup. T. Benning, last year's champion, did not appear to be in his usual robust health and so was not Sery to advantage. A very great convenience to the pic was initiated by Mr. Farmer, who had seen it first at the Australian meetings. namely, providing each competitor with" number printed on calico and attached to the pants or jacket; by this means it was easy to distinguish the different ders. The prizes were very hamisone and some regret was ex- pressed that larger fields did not enter. At the conclusion of the spons Miss Grethe distribut ed the prizes to the lucký recipients.
