MACHINE GUN COMPETITION. After His Excellency had spoken a few con- grailatory words to the officers, the Field Bal- tory, and A, B & C Machine-gun Companies, were marched down to the pier to embark for Lye-chi-kak, D & E Co.'s going to the ranges to finish their class firing The guns had been taken over and placed in position on a mound during the morning by a fatigue party which had placed targets on the hillside opposite. There were four separate bunchies of-targets, three being formed in lines, the top and second line a long raw of whitewashed canvas, the third about to smaller targets, also in line, while the fourth row was made up of still smaller targets, These three bunches were for the machine gunners, cach Company having one to them selves. The targets for the Field Battery were grouped in twos and threes, forming a circle on the hillside, with a line running down 10 the water's edge, the whole representing a camp. The range was a little under 1,000 yards. The Machine Gunners started the firing and the dust could be seen as the showers of bullets hit around the targets, showing the aim to be good. After the Masias had fired the allotsed number of rounds the "Cease Fire” sounded, and, the bunch nearest the Field Battery's targete were taken down and carefully packed away in sampans. The Seven-pounders now started and proved themselves as useful a body of marksmen as could be required, the fourth round striking the centre, target. Some idea of the accuracy of the shooting can be obtained when it is known that a fire was started right in the centre of the supposed camp by the bursting of the shrapnel.

CRICKET.

A match was played on Saturday between teams of the Hongkong Cricket Club, and the Hongkong Eootball Club. The Transvaal news of the last few days as been anything but pleasant reading to Englishmen, and the worst of the matter is that we may expect it to grow worse instead of better, for it now appears to be perfectly plain that we are greatly overmatched at all points and cannot hope to even hold our own until the arrival of re-inforcements; pot the handful of men now on the way, but the full army corps which was supposed to be and should have been ready to leave, for South Africa at a moment's notice.
