king that Reuter favoured us with was to the effect that it was, rumoured that the Boers had been repulsed and that they had then commenced to shell the town with KeuTT guns. A London telegram of the 14th. instant, the telegraph line has been eu in several ¦ places to the south of Maleking, in echim: naland, and the town is thins asolied, also that a free of two thousand Boers are occupying the town of Vryburg, situated in Bechuanaland to the south of Mafcking. I was near Vryburg that one of the two armoured trains, mentioned as being at Mafcking, was captured and destroyed by a Boer force and it is only ton probable that the railway has been destroyed and Mafcking utterly cut off from the Cape, while the lack of news points strongly to the supposition that the town is either closely invested or already in the hands of the enemy. It is on the wes tern side of the Transwahl and the Orange Free State that we are weakest. Our vastern forces have been strengthened by the oppor- tune arrival of the Indian contingent, but in Griqualand and Bechuanaland matters would appear to be otherwise, for we do not think it pbable that it has been found possible to spare a very strong force from the Cape to operate in that quarter peading the arrival of reinforcendents from England. This will leave the Boers with a practically free hand in that direction and, as a Londen: telegram of the 2nd instant stated that the Boers were massing in the neighbourhood of Mafeking and another wire of a day later reported the Orange Free State Artillery, under Com- mandant ALBRECHT, to be moving on Kim

beley, we may take it that the Boers are fully alive to the fact that they can do us a considerable amount of harai by attacking our weakest posts. It is also said that Mr. CECIL RHODES is lying ill at Kimberley, and if this is the case the Boers would have very good incentive for turning their attention to that town, for they hold him responsible, not only for the Jameson raid, but for the present state of affairs as well.

United Kingdom Railways. The general report to the Board of Trade in Kingdom for 1898remarks that the main features regard to the railway companies of the United brought out by a comparison with 1897, are similar in many respects to those shown in comparing the results for 1897 and 1896. Again there has been considerable increase in the traffic and receipts of the companies, accompanied by a large proportionate increase in working expenditure than in revenue cared, a fact which, coupled with an increase in the amount of the capital itself, has, as in 1897, again entailed a reduction in the percentage propor tion of the net garnings to the total capital "paid up."
A Victoria Cross for Bravery,
Now that Sir George White has started for Natal it may be interesting to recall the deed which gained for him his Victoria Cross In the engagement at Charasia during the Afghan War the artillery and rifle fire failed to dislodge. the enemy from a hill, which it was necessary to capture. Major White, therefore, resolved to head an attack upon it in person. Advancing with two companies of his regiment, and climb- ing from one steep hill to another, he came upon a body of the enemy strongly posted and outnumbering his force by about eight to one. His men being very much exhausted, and immediate action being necessary. Major White took a rifle, and, going on by himself, shot down the leader of the enemy. This act so intimidated the rest that they fled round the side of the hill, the position was won, and Sir. George obtained his V.C.

NOTES AND COMMENTS.
THL TRANSVAAL.
The Reeter's telegrams which we publish to-day show that our troops are doing good work in Natal, nur "they must not be taken, as many folks appear to mehed to regard them, as foreshadowing the speedy begin at the end." Trub, we have captured two oer positions and seven guns, but it must not be Forgotten that these successes have taken place within our own territory and that we Still occupy, as it were, the position of the besieged and have not so far carried the war into the enemy's country. Our lusses at Glencoe prove at a glance that the fight was a stiff one, while the proportion of officers killed as compared with men shows one ofliner to every three rank and file, which rertainly looks as though the shooting of the Boers had not deteriorated. The loss of
sores were allowed to proceed is probably the Portuguese. We did not desire to hat the attention of everybody directed to our little transaction and so Ar KRUGER'S war nuterial was allowed to pass as though we had nothing, to say in the matter. The Boers appear, however to have smelt a rat, for, on the oth ultimo, Reuter informed us that they had occupied Koomati Poort, which is their frontier station upon the Portuguest border, where the Delagoa Bay-jobannesburg Railway enters Transvaal territory. Thus, a strong Naval Brigade landed at Delagoa Bay would, after forcing the passage of Kromati Poor, be able to enter the Trans val and distract the auction of the Boers by rendering their rear insecure should we receive a check for any considerable period at Laing's Nek.
