TIENTSIN, September 28th,

. A great feeling of uneasiness has been gain. ing ground here among business men on account of the plague, especially as a' few suspicious cases were reported at Taku a few days ago. But up to date I believe no evidence. has been forthcoming that any actual plague case has occurred, a certain amount of bubonic g discase being always more or less extant among the Chinese, the doctors tell us: As it is to be feared it is pretty bad in Newchwang, and it is utterly impossible to safeguard the whole of the const, it seems too much to expect that we shall escape it altogailier. So far we have been unable to substantiate the very tall story, published in Shanghai by the Russian Consul. General regarding 2,000 coffins waiting for tran- shipment, and we hope that it is a vast exaggera tion. You must understand that our anxiety reg garding the plague is no idle "funk."
