Lapsley made a determined effort to reach the box at the end. u. this, however, be failed, but, we imagine, his failure caused more fun than he would have had he been successful, for when he found he could not reach the prize he made a strong leap into the water, when the poll rebounded and caused the cover of the box to dy open, out of which immediately flew two ducks, un- doubtedly delighted to be liberated from their] confinement. Big Russian Failure,

ST. PETERSBURG, August-12th, The events in connection with the suspension of payment on the part of Von Derweis. were so remarkable that the St Petersburg Bourse at first could hardly believe them. A depressing effect has been produced by this failure as although Derweir's capital had been estimated at between 50,000,000 and 60,000,000, roubles he will, after paying all his liabilities, scarcely be able to produce as assets as much Rs. 5,000,000 or 6,000,000 roubles,

Derweis' millions were sunk in a great group of undertakings, each member of which sup ported the other. A great independent net work of railways-one of the most important in the country-was regarded by Derweis as his own. In connection with this railway a number of ships plied for mercantile purposes on the Volga and the Caspian. A great machine, factory, an insurance company, a cement factory, and a number of smaller undertakings were among his other interests.
