D'ARC'S MARIONETTES.
If possible, the new Pantomimes Beard is drawing still larger houses than did its predecessor "Robinson Crusoe "did and last night was no exception to the rule. Owing to the Amateur Dramatic Club giving a special performance for soldiersand sailers, not so many were en evidence at the Bijou Theatre ns or- dinarily, but the Chinese tyrned upin force and the well deserved record of never having played hat to crowded houses in Hongkong was kept up. Besides the Pantomime the programme has been slightly altered, new topical hits, intro- duced, and the dresses of the models made smarter, so that as second or even third visit only helps one to mare fully appreciate the wonders of this marvellous show," Mr. D'Arc, to mark his appreciation of the hearty wel come he has received in Hongkong is going to give a free entertainment to the charity school children of thongkong next Saturday after- noon. He evidently knows the best way to give universal suisfaction both to the children and the British Public as well, as nothing will so soon open a Britisher's heart as consideration for children. Next Saturday night will be a "bumper" one, as T: E. Sir Henry and Lady Blake have consented to give the theatre their patronage on that date. We should strongly advise those of dur, readers

The challenge has been accepted as I thought, but no details are as yet arranged. The enter tainment of the visitors will probably include a burnt cork show and private theatricals.
It is not often we have anything really sensational in Tientsin, but the Community has been much disturbed this week by the terrible suicide of a lady, who, acting under some inexplicable-frenzy, cut her throat on Wednesday evening. The unfortunate woman was known to be somewhat eccentric though -brilliantly clever, but the dreadful.occurrence cast a gloom over our small circle. Another very sudden death also occurred this week, Mr. Hawkes, formerly of HMS. Leander, and since 1894 gymnastic instructor at the College here, dying suddenly of heart disease.

Far East. One is tempted to question if we ever shall. The Germans have rather a way of their own in doing things. They have a fine concession here as I think I have already mentioned, and have lost no time in making magnificent roads in it and establishing a military police. But no German is living there or showing the least inclination to do ap. They prefer our side of the walk. But what they have done, or a certain German firm, is to build a number of brothels in the British Extra- Concession, which are as much a menace to the comfort of the neighbourhood as they are apparently a profit to their owner. There are frequent rows in the locality, and this week there appears to have been quite a serious fracas over some thieves reported to be hidden in the place. The Chinese Magistrate appears to have exceeded his authority and to have forced his way into the houses, while some allege the opportunity was seized to carry off some of the girls who are now being held us hostage.

TIENTSIN, January 23rd. We may be on the eve of some events, and 1 devoutly hope so, but I cannot pretend to really predict. Mr. Chang Yin: Mao is in no small danger of losing buttons, feathers and office for his pains.
