Lord CHARLES has laid before us the in. formation that he has been enabled to gather at the different ports visited but he has told us nothing new. We did not expect him to do so, for to all conversant with China the evils of which Lord CHARLES spoke, have long been matters of famil iar interest. What we wished his Lordship to do was to make himself thoroughly con- versant with our grievances and their impor- tance to British Trade in the Far East. Thére was

On leaving his home, I met Miss Dr. Wiles who has a very large practice among Chinese families in various parts of the city, and she too is of opinion that plague does not exist in the city or the suburbs at present.
On the morning of the 28th I went to the native Kwang Chai Hospital, where I found about 100 out-patients waiting to be seen. - 1. stood by and personally examined the patients. while the consultation was going on. I found that most of them were suffering from chest complaints and some from intermittent lever and bowel complaints, but there was no case of plague.. I walked round the hospital and found that there were only twenty patients in
the wards, though the hospital had accommo dation for one hundred patients. The Director. and doctor of that hospital informed me that there have been a good many cases of fever and insiz, and they attributed them to the long
absence of rain.
From enquires made at the druggist and coffin shops in various parts of the city and suburbs, leamed that business in both was unusually dull.
I am glad to bring to your notice that a Sanitary Bureau has been formed in Canton by a number of progressive Chinese itemti with the sanction of the authorities. It has branch offices in different parts of the city. Its objects are to remove accumulations of refuse, to sweep the streets and tacican away: fith, from the drains,

A SAD STORY.
THE DEMORALIZATION OF JAMES JOSIAH JONES
Many people will remember James Josiah Jones, who arrived in Hongkong some little time ago from England. The day after his arrival he wrote the following letter to his
people at home -
I have just arrived in Hongkong; it is a wonderful and wicked placeWhat grieves the heart most is to see the poor fellows who draw, through the streets a vehicle, called a rickshaw. It's downright horrible cruelty; they are nothing more than beasts of burden and that the authorities should countenance- such buroar. degradation is scandalous. When I landed, about twenty of these poor fellows crowded around me with their vehicles, each. one begging and praying mo to patronize him; it was a sad and awful sight. I scorned the idea of being drawn through the streets by a fellow man. I told them all how sorry I was for the degradation they had to suffer, and giving each of them to cents. I walked to my hotel as a good christian should. The poor fellows laughed with joy."
Two weeks after James Josiah Jones appeared at the Police Court to answer three charges-
