It was not long after the alarm that the fore- mast went by the board, and for two hours the mainmast till that fell on the fore side with a fames, spreading rapidly at, licked round the tenible crash. The crew could do calking, and when all seemed hopeless they left the ship and look refuge on board the steamer Patroclus. The offices were the last to leave. Up to the Ume of going to press, the exact is still burning and has become a complete wreck. The Baring Brothers is an American ship, balit to 1877 is Thomaston, Maine of wood and steel, and has a registered tonnage of 2,090. Capt.In Smalley, who commanded her, has a tonately is not insured, though his co-oWBCTS share in her, so we are informed, whleb unfer. are fully covered by insurance. The vessel has made some very good passeges to the Far East, but this one stems to have been specially un. fortunate, as from the on'set there has been dia- content among soms of the crew. She artlved in port from Yokohama with six men la frons, and the United States Consol sentenced them to terms of Imprisonmet for refusing daty on the Page round from Yokohama. Font of these men were bacated a day or so ago and placed on board, but they declared they would not go far in the ship. But the laple of several months has to some extent modified these pessimistic views. It is remembered that a commercial and shipping port the paritions of the naval cocks, coaling station la not made or developed in a day; that not even and other Government ses bave yet been de- termibed, nor, consequently, that of the future. commercial quarter; that as land has been yet acquired by pitrate individuals, no basfaces premlces or warehouses began; that up to the present there exisis no well-to do native trading commually on the spot ready to co-operate the creation or development of Kyaochua to= trading and shipping centre; and, in short, that the expectation of a sudden transter of the tende of Chilco on large scale to the shores of Kyaochao Bay in entirely premature.

There is, moreover, another consideration which should not be forgotten.

Supeilor as Kyaocbao Bay is to Chefso as port for the province in general, there is a region along the north-west shores of the Shactong Promontory as an outlet and entrepôt for which Cheloo is beller situated, given one condition, than the more southerly harbour. The region in that of which Lal chow-la is the principal city, and straw braid a leading production. The condition to the extension of right to trade regularly thither by means of small steaming craft, which has hitherto been reserved for single Chinese vessel. I have some hopes that such an extension of both export sed Import trade will prev fansible, and that Cheloo may receive a stimolas thereby that will comp nalo for such trade as may hereafter ha diverted from it to the fature port of Kyaochao.
