NEWS FROM MANILA.

SAFETY OF THE GOVERNOR 'GENERAL'S WIFE.

GENERAL MONET'S DEATH UNTRUE.

It appears (bal General Monet was not killed, as reported, but has managed to reach Manila bringing the Governor General's wife and family with him. They went overland from Macabebe to Pampanga and from thence by canoe to Maella. They had a terrible voyange, having to rus the gauntlet of the rebel posts on the river banks, when challenged replying that they were a rebel boat conveylog prisoners to Cavlic. At one point they were ordered to stop and on refusing to do so were fired upon, the rebels -afterwards parining them into the open bly, where the small canoe was almost swamped in the quails, but they managed to reach Mazlia although acarly starved.

The Spaniards are now strongly posted on the otkirts of the town and also along the whole length of the condult leading to the waterworks. The coadult they probably told on sufferance, as the rebel pickets swarm everywhere and could cally rald the position and destroy the condult, but being extremely anxious to conciliate the neutrals they retrata from dolag so on fccount of the horrible privations that such an act would cause in Manila.

The rebels have never employed cannon agamat Manila hitherto, but are now bringing sixty guns lota pastifon with the Intention of almolianedfsly sathing the Spanish latrench men's at Santa Mesa, Santa Ana and Maiale and by rendering ciber poslilons antenable, at a single coup, to dive the Spaniards inside the citadel with a mislmm of danger to the noncom. batants and their property. It is expected to take a week 10 belag the guns up, as they wil: bave to be taken a long way round over difficult country and I urey is undesirable.

At the large rebel camps at Malabon, Caloa. Cau, Franciaco, Marqofan, San Pedio and Paranaque perfect order prevalis, and the rebels are delighted with a successful rose that they have discovered for drawing the Spanish fire by Aring crackers in the dense woods,

They state that at the capture of Caloocan they had only

Hobson was so entheslastic that his confidence was infections, and the Admiral finally reluct anly gave his capment. -

When the Admiral's consent was obtained, Hobson became Impatient of all delay, and that very night, Wednesday, after the moon went down, he set the ilme for the event.
