THE WAR.
MANILA NOTES. (From Our Resident Correspondant.)
MANILA, June 6:b. * Po-day I had seranged in go to Cavito and to ryand get back towards Manila as far as por- sible by following the rebel lines, but things * here look such a decided torn for the worse that
.-
I thought it better to stay in town in order not to miss any important developments. Accord logly I started for the subath of Santa Ana where heavy firing could be heard,
"I was stopped at some distance from the Church of Santa Ans, which was fall of Spanish soldiers, who kept up do incessant faillade, bat da telling the Spanish officer of the poal that I was on the way to the house of en "Inglés" near the church ho, after some parlaying allowed me to proceed. Os striving at the house la question I found everything shut up, but in a Hule while a "boy" appested, opened the gute and admite me. There were three British familles occupying the house and they were all down la the base raent for the protection afforded by the thick stone walls. The upper parties of the house was of lighter construction and the ladies showed ma bullets which had entered the dining regis while they were at tiffin. A great many railre refugees were shel ered in and about the stubles and outhouses and all looked qulie happy and contented under the protection of the "Ingleses." 1 photographed the party of Engibihmen with the ladies and children'ard then went on to en- other English residence where we found some three hundred refugees. Santa's is not ex- pected to hold out much longer against the rebels, but the foreigners are quite safe from any direct attack the only danger being from stray bullets.
June yib.
I went to Concordia, Santa Mesa, Malate and other points where Gghting is in progress, and found the Spaniards bemmed to all round and slowly but surely given way. They waste a great deal of ammaltion be blazing away at where they soppose the rebels to be, sad reem to think that so long as they keep up a good Are at puffs of smoke they are doing splendid wark. The rebels meanwhile come down ander cover and do a good deal of "aniping at the Spaniarde who are in evidence, and when the Spanish have exhausted all their ammuelles
at that p dat they retire and the rebels advance and occupy the past. In this way the rebels advanced right up to Malate from Zapote within 14 hours. Anyone seeing the number of Span- Ish troops in he delven back woold way that this was imponible, and it should have been. At the other palsts visited the Spanish defences had not been carried, though fighting is almost Incessant In the autlying houses the people sre growing used to sleeping with the bullets pattering all about, bet la the city things have not yet growibso bad as that,

One of the local para last night published an article ailing that Led Salisbury, in |x speech, had taken the side of Amsilea and enuselated the doctrine that "might Is sight" and this has much locrested the anfmostly of a cerista class of Spaslards against the English. The Escolta shop-keeper class are about the worst for this sort of thing, and omdetthemavea gaso far as to say that before

CUBA'S DEBT BURDEN.
Under Spanish administration Cuba has con- fracted a debt si close upon (90,5 oặc “o which requltes £8,809,000 per sunum to provide for the coupons and sinking funds, and the Cuban Treximy, at the commercement of this year owed £14,000,000 for arrests due to the army, pensions, contractors, &c. Under good conditions the filand bes resources capable of repaying its debts. In: et, Cuba la worth fighting for. The exps of Spain to Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Philippine Islands used to represent about seven-ef hs of the country's trade. In 1893 she axird gamla to Cubs to the value of £5,116,958 and in the same year Puerto Rico Took £1,347,356. Other countles t naked barely a millon steding. Slace the outbreak these figur have naturally dimlashed, as for instance, the sugar cane drop, which used to be about 350,00 tons, has decitot 1 to about 16,000. The same mrked drop has occurred with the tobacco cp, which from an average of 560,000 bales
bel re the outbreak has fallen to about oaz. seventh of that amount. Altogeiber, the whole trade of the island is p ralysed, and the scener the two Powers concerned settle their differences one way or other the fater for its future.
Remarkable LOVE TRAGEDY.
A remarkable love tragedy was recently en. acted at an hotel in the Boulevard Richard Lenoff, in Parly, when two laud reports were heard coming from a room taken on the previous evening by young man named Jean Bapilate Yang, a cabinet-maker, 25, and Loulac Girard, scort-maker, of 16. When the door was foreid open Yung was found lying on the flour beside tão bed with a bullet-wound is his cheat, and Louise Girard was kneeling on the bed shot through the heart. In her hand she still held the revolver with which she had committed suicide. Yung was conveyed to a hospital, but be dled in less than an hour. Two letters laft by the salcides explsla the motive of their act. They were desperately in love with one another, and had tried by every means to obtain the consent of the girl's pareals to their mailage; but the parents had remained hederate on sccount of their daughter's age. The lovers' relations had always been of the most innocent description, but they feared that steps would taken to prevent their clog each other, and so resolved to die together. From the position of the bodies it wan časy to see how the drama enacted. Yung Blood ap close to the bed while the girl shat him, and then the turning the revolver towards herself with her left hand, shot herself through the heart. This is belleved to be the first occasion on which a woman has shown such determined courage in oon of the's melancholy tragedirs. Gencially the man fires the revalver, kľ’is the woman, and afterwarde mlases himself.
