FOOTBALL.
A RITROSPICT.
Football is now finished for the seares, and enthusiasts will-havo at least six moniky' rest
before the climate of the colony will permli them to chase the leather sgala. Of late years th popularity of this form of sport has bean'stendil.' tacressing in Hongkong and in a like degree has the proficiency of the players advanced, this teason the standard of play being far above any- thing we have had before.
The Hongkong and Kowlson teams were stranger than ever and the ag 5 D. RA. proved
themselves much suparlor to any of their pre- decessors. The main credit of the improvement However, ladus to the King's Own Lancaster Re" Elment, which contains a profusion of associ alion talentiq its ranks.
A team elected from the entire regimest took the field on three occasianu, twice against the Club and once agalant a weak team chosen from the RA and Kowloos, bat they proved them. selves altogether too strong for their opponents and won by a tall score each theme. ''

As we have been fastrected by superior au- tharties to make the smallest number of autopsies and with the desire to respect the customs and belief of the native population, It is zametimes pozalble that the doctor in Macao, especially

After playing it down pa the audience, the conjares proceeded to take what looked like the best part, of De la Rne's stock bom out of the vests and coals of young min we would never suspect of carrying pas1e= boards around with them. The perfeimer's illustration of the different matkonsilites modes of healing cards was a work of art and gule paralysed old usg and poker players who saw The Cinematograph wax in good order and areal views had to be repeated, notably Per- simmon's win of the Derby, the London Fire Bitgade'q tain dut, the Turkish warship in action and the Geo-Türkish war episode. THE EAST-POINT PATALITY.
YESTERDAY'S INQUEST,
An inquest was held at the Magistracy at noon yesterday by Comdr. Hastlegs regarding the death of Cheng Lo Chat, a coolle who died from injuries received in a vita, at East Point Sugar Refinery, on the 6th lust.
They made the mistake of including the or thics navy men in their ranks and con. sequently were weakened when the war vesicle were ordered from the port. Luckily they were enabled to obtain sultable men to fill the vacancies but nevertheless a team, when l units have settled down to one another's play, always suffers somewhat by changes in its com. position, Another bandicap was the lack of s ground on which to play their matches. Thes is * plot allotted to naval teams, one to the and the Hongkong Club bare the privileges of the excellent new ground, but there is no space on which any other civilian team bas a flist claim. We hope the authorities wili consider this matter before next season and recilly what is apparently an justice. There Is space alongside the club's pitch for another match ground and we think it might be given over to Kowloon and the Hongkong Colis for Jolat use.
Of the Kowloon players Wilson (captain) and Ritchie at ball back rendered most useful service to their team and Smillie the third of the trio was siso very effective Dyer and Lapsley al bick formed a strong defence, the latter, a local youlb, especially coming into evidence towards the end of the season. Burrell, the goal-keeper, was not tested wall the R. A. match and then he did not come up to expecla- tlour. The forwards were the wonkost division of the team, this being greatly owing to frequent changes on their left wing. Gow sad Barlow on the right were the brat and Dustin, the centre-forward, was a hardworking, pain-shoot and they then cleared out. Hongkong. Sir, I read the Hongkong Datly Press of Yesiciday's date, and in it I saw fasealed the re- pest of the extraordinary meeting of the Hong kong Sanitary Board, in which it has dis cussed the sanitary state of Macao. At first I thought of writing you at once and give veat to the feeling of indignation, which the persoal of the document awakened in me. I thought afterwards that the language that I would have to use, would at least be so outrageous, as the language used by some of the members of the Board, when speaking of Macao and the authoriiles of this colony; and what would be pardonable as a man or a Ports gaese, I would not perhaps be excused as a physician. I chose, therefore, to allow the first | in impicisions to wear off and address you rollte terms, which, in my opinion, such stions lay any stress on what a Captain Sorexintendent of Police said at the meeting, who, for some reasons, It Is only the Engush Government that can apreciate and justify, has a seat and a vote in a council, which apparently ought to be composed exclusively of professional men.
First of all, the experienca la Hongkong. widely confirmed by that of Bombay in the near past, shows clearly, that the severd measure of house to house wiltation has but one advantage in comparison to many disadvant- throw dust to ages. The advantage, is the eyes of the public, making great fose and boasting at will by the non-professionals. Among the disadvantages, principally, are that of spreading terror among the people, who are victims of being deprived of freedom; that of hindering the work of the prevention of diseases and of the returns, therefore in place of the police discovering the sick in their houses, they only find dead bodles in the streets; that of tiring and exhausting the police agent, rendering them more ilable to be victims of the epidemic, as it is happened in that colony in 1894; and lastly that of causing a violent rese- tion among the oppressed, as it has happened and is s'ill happeolog in British India.
And it was for this reason, that I read with the greatest indifference the assertion put forward by the Cap'sia Superintendent of Police Thay knew the slack way they did things at Macsó. They had no house to house visitation.
Bat if those reasons are not sufficient to justily my Indifference, the fact alone will do that this assertion was gratullously put forward by a laymar, whose opinion may be highly ap preciated in the respectable police corporation, bat has not the slightest importance in the scientific world.
Of all the members of the Board who took
part in the discussion only one-and maior tanately, I helleve, he is not a physician-show ed always an uncommon good sense, and a desire to it the truth, without fear. It was Mr. Ede, who proved not be blinded by the with of lowering of Macas to utmost decredit in which the colony of Hongkang in plooged with regard to bygienic condions, cor by withdrawing the attention of the pubile in trying to make people believe that it is Macao-and not Canton, nor Amoy, nor Swatow, or Faktol, nep Bombay, the origin of the epidemie of the plague in Hongkong,
It is 201 however Mr. Edo that I shall speak of in this letter, addressed by a physician to one of his colleagues on the subject of public hygiene; but I cannot help thanking him from his im- varilailty and mild objections which reveal frank and loyal character, a love of truth, ail other considerations. superlos
You wrote, and Dr. Clark read it at the meet ing, that" for some months past, smallpox and plague bave been prevalent in Macao,"
Perhaps you might doubt the veracity of the that the same thing happens Eere, as in Hong, gistration of deaths in Macao, If you suspect kang, which is nothing, but a sieve with big holes, from where compres constantly esespe without belag registered. But, if you reflect little, you will res that the statistics of Macao, are more exact than those of Hongkong: (1st) because Macao is a small territory having, only an area of 3 square kilometres, and a great 'iberefore, the Inspection can be made with the portion of the shore is et difficult access, where, greatest precision; (2nd) because the Chisaman who gives the information to the registrar, pays so fee to obtsla the permit for burlit of the body outside the city, in ground beyond the Portuguese jurisdiction; while the relatives and lodgers who conceal the dead body, even for one day, or attempt to remove it from Macao, con great risk to be heavily punished; (3rd) because we have not in Macao the system of house to kausa visita- tion, as practised in a vexatious way in Hong- kong (4 h) it la maiter of fact that the Chinese inhabitants of Macso are more gentia and submissive, that the Chinese of Hongkong.
Forthle reason and many other circumstances, which would be too long to relate here, it follows. that returns can be obtained in Hacao with'an exacltade which is not possible in Hongkong. Lastly, the moment that a physician becomer aware of the existence of the plague, the fact is recorded immediately on the returne of the deaths occurred, and were it possible to conceal lo su official and scientific document, what use would it be to Macao? Unfortunately, sre not the preventive measures adopted regard ing persons proceeding from Macao utopian and purely theoretical ?
|
Let us proceed, for the subject is arduous.
桌
I am not aware, what tight you have to de- manding that the returns of deaths in Macis should describe what kind of erapilve lever hid Caus d death; as only be smallpox generally produced fatal cases in Macao; as acelasilo chicken pox and measles, are dueases that do not itself cause death; as deaths from measles and variation are excessively rare in Macao; I thought it would simplify, by placing in one group all deaths caused by eruptive fevers. You find this teconvenient, but you have a remedy. When you wish to know, If the craptiva favers wern one or more species, you have only to nik me and I will inform you willingly. Meanwhile, if you allow me, I shall continue to call emeli. pax emptive fever. Old hablis are not easily put aside.
After all, this whim in wishing to reparata smali-pox "from, scarlatlan and monster might be admitted, and one might understand What this system of divijing the
groupy, cannot be understood, much less be tolera. ted, is that Dr. Clark should dare assert openly at the meeting of the Hongkong Sanitary Board: "They (the Macan physicians?) change the names. Sometimes they call it Who gave Dr. Clark authority for asserting typhoid and sometimes eruptive fever,"
that the Portuguese doctors call small-pox typhold fever and abdominal typhus eruptive (ever? Did ibe emfacit physiclan sen any cases sa diagnosed by Portuguese doctors? Has ha any proof that doctors from Portuguese medical schools, are quacks, ready to sell science and conscience?
Dr. Clark is wrong in so proceeding against colleagues who are as worthy of public respect isha. Science has no home, evon, if it were of English origin. The true physician is he who devotes his time in lestening the sufferings of humanity, and not be who puts his name, bia science and conscience, at the disposal of the first who pays him to discredit those who praise, above all, the love of truth and professional
honour.
