THIRD DAY, THURSDAY, 17TH FEBRUARY.
There was again a large attendance at the races to-day and the interest in the various events was keen as ever. The weather was dall and oppressive and at times rain appeared im- minent but fortunately it held off, with the exception of a slight drizzle which luckily soon stopped, and a good day's sport was enjoyed, As usual the indios mastered strongly in the stands, and there was. na falling off to the great crowd of Chiness that fillel the outer side of the course. The big mat. aked for Chinesa on the Wong-nef-chong side was also patronised by a large number of Celestial sporta. The little game played with thres ice and two cups had many volaries doing the day and in some casen pretty con- alderable sums changed hands. There was L fair amount of speculation on the races, some people having the inevitable "good thing" to back, and others agala pinned their falih to ceri;in riders and followed' thale mounts all. through. In the case of Mr. Master this would veera a safe plan to adopt, as he certainly is the "Tioman" of this part of the world. Besides the Hongkong and New Victoria Hotel stands our lead Mr. Goodchlid, of the Grill Room, catered for the hungry and thirsty, Altogether
