so indebted to my French Missions represent a very great power in the friends for their coustent hospitality and their land, and they work independently of the generosity in leading me men, borsen and bosis, Government fiself. In any Annsmite town or that it was often a matter of regret to me that I village will be found the building of the Missions could not be of some service to them, except in Etrangères, and the worthy Fathers will be seen such trifling matiers as these. working with natiring seal to improve the con- dition at the natives and to Chrisilaoise them, It is a strange sight to see a priest in the paddy folds, seeing that they are ploughed to a proper depib, or superintending the constraction of a canal. This work will not, however, prevent bim from teaching a class of little Annamiter, ar from attending to his purely religious duties The missionaries in Annams lead a very hard life; the staplest fea, the bumblest shelter and the priests robe represent the sum total of their share of this world's gift. Yet they seem happy enough, and as they are incessantly at work amidst the natives, whose language they thoroughly understand, they have an intimate knowledge of the counity, and a very great itinence over the Annamlies of every class,
All along the coast of Indo-Chinx there is n succession of parts of varying Importance. "There is Phan-thist close by Cape St. James, and extending northwards are Phaney, Phin. tang, Heat-Cobe, Qalahoo, Tournus und finiliv Haiphong. The smaller places are all a got. deal like one another, and consist chielip of a very rqssild village on the seashore, and a market place surrounded by a small town some miles faland. The Costom House, with the French coloure flying over in always a pramloent object to be obserrel on landing, the house of the Resident and that of the saw or malies prefect, are perhaps the only buildings worthy of the name, and even they are some times very modest affairs. The establishment of the Foreign Missions stands by fiselt, and coastals of a number of buildings of which the church is the centre. Here are the dwellings of the priests, their schools, workshops and gransries. If the place is of rufficient Impor- tance there is a French officer in charge of the Links or Annamite soldiers in the pay of the Government, and somewhere near the market plice there is a solitary telegraph operator, who o looks after the postal arrangements of the diatrics.
If a building siger than the rest, or strife more respectable than the others is to be seen, It certainly belongs to a Chinamne. There may -not be more than half a dosen Chinese in the whole place, but they make all the money that Is to be got out of it, and plunder the Annamites shamefully. The Annamlie dwellings are the merest shamiles imaginable, Just sticks and thatch pat together semehow, and crammed together all in a hesp. Into there miserable | dwellings the Anasmites crowd themselves in Incredible numbers, in uites defiance of all decency or sanitation. They are a very small race, requiring hot little room for themselves, and I have sometimes walked through an Annamite street in which the roofs of the houses on each side were brushed by my shouldera us I went along. Io the course of my progress dozens of men and women would scary lata thele hutches like so many rabbits, whilst I unavoidably kicked up a never ending cload of disty chlidren, many dogs and cale, and third- rate goats, pigs, and poultry. The whole of an Annamite village swarms with life of a kind, and superabundantly with deas. Fish, tres and otherwise, is all over the place, dasi and dirt are everywhere, and the rqualor of one of these villages is extreme.
The Ansamites themselves are a small weedy race, the great balic of whom are very poor, and whose morals are to better than their physique. It is said that thele diminutive stature and welke ly frame it largely due to the remarkable way in which they are brought into the world. An Anaamite confinement is a truly astonishing affair. It appears that every one of their mid wives, after resorting 10 a vigorous massage, actually tramples nederfoot, in a certain way, the woman who is confided to her care. The anfortunate woman is then delivered in sn up. tight position, and is finally stretched on a hardle, over barning charcoal, which more or less roasts her. This is, at course, the slightest possible sketch of a thing diffeni; to describe at mil, although it is so extraordinary and so nearly concerns the entire Annamite Face, that 'tblok it permissible just to 'menilos it. I have come acrosf a detailed account of it in French work, and one of my friends was most dealrous of fall ing me how European lady of agr acquate tance had, in default of any other asılstance, been compelled to submit to the Acnumite treat ment, avec tout le tremblemané, na he expressed It, but I fled, and was out of range before bo

I had to contend everywhers with the deter mined hostility of the Chinese, At Hona Cohe I gat ont of a serious difficulty, thanks to a mis- stonery, and at Phanrang a similar trouble was of the Resident. The Chinese know that I had sur ounted by the good will and the armness
a cargo ready for Singapore, and that a steamer they therefore made things interesting for me by was due to arrivo al a certain date to bed By hiring every junk, fishing bost, or craft of any ad that the Ansmites possessed, so that I found myself anable to get a single ton of any thing afloat. The situation was one of great diffulty, nor could missionaries help me this time, as they have little or no tofsence over the Chincic, to whom the Annamite 6therman ard constantly to debt, I placed the matter before the Resident in the light of a conspiracy, and incidentally mentioned that concerned the Customs as well as myself, a no export duties could be paid on cargo that I officer commanding the Annamite companies, was moable to ship. Shortly afterwards the and one or ime other officials paid a visit to the Chinese camp, whilst a significant warning was rent to certain Annamite headmen. I was told against these people, I could have them all that if I cared to being a charge of conspiracy arrested, but it was no ase pressing my advan. tage too far, so I demarded nothing more than the liberty to hire all the junks and bants I wanted. The loading of the cargo for the Con finental was started at once, and again I was able to go on my way relacing. I could not bat be thankful, however, that I bad not « Beltish Residint to deal with instead of a Frenchman. A British Realdent would have seen naibing but a perfectly legitimate operation in the Chi nese hiring every craft that would flost, in order to prevent me from loading a steamer, and I should have come la lor one of thona weighty saubs to dear to the heart of the British official
by one of his countrymen in a difficulty. In all

People at home, who take very good care not to sk their skins within thousands of miles of Asia, think that this sort of thing is bumana, which will end by costing as dear some day, and wise, but it is a rollen system nevertheless,

The missionaries were constantly befriending ma whilst I was in Aanım, and it is only as tural that I should remember them gratefully, Perhaps an Instance of the help that I received from a missionary will best illustrate their pawet in the country, had bought a cargo of salt from a group of Annamites at Hone Cobe, in the teeth of the very bitter opposition of the Chinese gang of the piace. A contract was duly signed at the Uttle custom house, and, to secare my bargain, I gave them several boxes of dollars, which they took away with them. Nothing ac enved until the day before my steater was due, sod 1 was disagreeably surprised on that morn- ing when a siring of Annamites, carrying my boxes of dollars pitched them on the sands to front of the custom hoase, and one of them flung my contract on top of them. They had been "got at" by the Chinese, and did not in- tend in deliver the cargo for my steamer. It was an ugly fix. The whole European population of Rone Cobe consisted of Monticus T, the customs officer, who certainly did his best for me, and tried very hard to get them to keep to thefr con- tract, but in vain, the Annamites were obdurale and firally marched off, leaving the boxes of dollars on the sanda. Dollsrs were at a discount for some hours that day, as I would have no thing to do with the pile on the sands, though, of course, which was being kept of them privately. Getlug on my horse I rode hard until I reached Nia Hos, rome filteen miles away, where I found Father A. and poured out my grievances to him, The worthy man im mediately offered to ride back with me all that distance, over a very rough country, in order to assist me "We got to Home Cobe, hunted up the
