Save that the troops have built a road from Bara to fort Jamrud which is practicable for field artillery, the Peshawar Column has so far done nothing of material importance since its arrival at Barn on the atst uit. On Wednesday last Emel Hammond took out 3,000 men on a once to the Gandao pass which le quito adjacent to the camp, and to hins alle of which the Bara-Jamrud road has been carried, but the force returned to camp without having encountered any of the enemy, though a. fem Afriāls were seen on the hills when the troops | were matching back to the encampment. Another reconnaissance with similar results was made on the 5th. Since then, and laderd since the ret, everything has been abnormally quiet; the sniping appear to have ceased entirely, and the Inhabitants of the villages beyond the adjacent Blits have begun moving off into the further bliis or elsewhere, taking along whatever catle sad rage and sticks of property they can carry, in ord er to be well out of the way of the ruch that every- body stems to expect will secur when the hill men are driven round here by the Tirak Column and are forced to fight hemmed in between the two British armies. "If this does escur, and the enemy mikes any sort of a sand in the plains, there is a centsiaty of terrible slaughter. They have no artillery at all, while both Britias divisions are well equipped. The local force of this arm has been augmented by the anival of an elephant battery which is manned by Royal Horse Artillery from Campbellpre.
