As is usual with the appich of the Chinese New Year robberies are becoming unpleasantly frequent in Canton and the neighbouring dis tricts. The closing of so many gambling houses bas also added to the ranks of the criminal citres. On the 26th alto, a daring robbery was committed at a house in Shek Lang, Tuog kan province, when a band of thieves entered the place, ransacked it from end to end, removed all the pariable goods and then set the boose on fire. Unfortunately two adjoining houses became ignited and all were destroyed. So far no arrests Bave been made. Again on the 30 holio. another gang of rafflans, pretending to be policemen, entered an opium divan there and robbed the Inmates of their belongings and any other articles they cou'd lay handión.
The house of the Kwong ismily was entered by a bead of thieves on the 19th alto. Some of the neighbours happened to see them and they ated beating a gong on the boatetop. The robbers were alarmed and made off before ther could be arrested. A paper dealer's shop about 100 yards from the last place was raided soon After and two of the taferes were caught and banded to the anthorliler.
