THE FANGTSZE REGION.

United States Consul A, C. Janes, of Chlo- klang, has drawn up a comprehensive report pa the Region of the Yangtizs. Kiang. The whole tride of the Yangtze Volley, inhabited by a population of over 100,000 000, is con- veyed on this mighty river, and the great bulk passes inward and outward through Shanrbal. The treaty ports on the river are the collecting Centres towards which exports flow from the provinces, while the Imports are received Shanghat and thence carried by inexi steamers and larchas to the various distributing centres on the river of which Chỉnklang la by no means the least. It is thus neen' that the Yangtias Kling, one of the world's greatest highways, plays the most important pist in the enormous traffic cartled on in Central China. A description of his river should, therefore, tike precedence In any article on tride, and I propose dealing

with it first.

He proceeds to enumerate the various treaty -ports on the liver, and gives statisties of their trade, and the methods and means by which it is carited on. He se'm to be of opinion that Chang-king can be reached by steam, bas though steam communication will minimise the danger, the risks of navigation between Chong- king and Icbang will always be great. From the report, which is both lengthy and interesting and includes much Information which will be within the knowledge of our readers who bave Interests in the Yanglaze Valley, the China

Gazelle makes the following extracts :-

The Yangts, on account of its great length its floods, its rapid rise and fall, and immense deposits of all, the frequent formation, shifting, and disappearance of sand bike, according to Ibe seavan, is somewhat difficult to navi. ate... Plots are required whose knowledge of the channel in all its changing conditions enables them to cope with the caprices of the river. It Is worthy of remark, however, that, in spite of all its vagaries, the river never sills ap sofficiently at any one point to cause a suspension of steamer traffic, and it is only in the winter months that there is any trouble. From March to November Tersely of the deepest draft may be taken to. Haskow in perfect safety,

At Tongchow the list prstenger station i reached, and close to thin is North Tree. A large bacy, moored to the fairway here, marks the begining of the Lang Shan Crousing—that portion of the river dreaded by passengers and pilots, as navigation after dark of this intricate network of shoals and send baske is utterly out of the question. All vessels bound downstream anchor eff North Tree to await daylight, and upward-bound craft time their departure from Wooing so that the passage can be made in daylight. Fogs are of frequent occurrence Dear the month of river during the winter, and on the approach of a fog everything affest has to drop anchor and wall patiently all the weather clears. The channel is marked by boys, which can eally be seen on a clear day, but absolutely nothing has been done to make navigation possible during the night. Osly the teamer companies and customers know what loss of money and valuable tim is annually in curred by the sterly defective marking of this Important waterway, traversed by upwards of 1,000 oro tons of shippine darlög the year, Nothing could be essies or simpler than to place an adequate number of buoys from Woosung to North Tree, and to light at least those at the erical points with electricity. Navigailon' ai all Imer, except during fogs, would then be per. fectly safe.

The names of rivers, towns, &d, in Ching are descriptive, as for instance, Hoang-Ho, or Yellow River, from ts, muddy waters. I ein Gind anthing, however, from which to drive the name of Vengtare, except the local opinion, entertalmai mostly by the lideraff, that it comes from the clly of Yangshow (now.twelyn miles laláně) whose walls were formerly, it is said, washed by Its watery. If this be correct, Its course has ándergone a remarkable, but not unparalleled, change doring the last few centuries. From Chungking to the sea, li in familiarly known to the pepple by the proud name of the Great River The Hoang-Ho and the Yangisse, emplying into the ocean their aelted and mighty volumes of medly water, has given rise to the name of the Yellow Ser,

His Lordship said he thought differently, Witness, to Mr. Francis. He received all the payments from Olsen & Co., of Shanghal. The accounts produced were those connected with the charior party.

Mr. Francis put the accounts fa and asked that they be muked as evidence.

Mr. Pollack objected and asked that kls objec tion be noted. It would not be fair to his client to show it to the jury when bo had not seen it.

Mr. H. E. Pallack, in his opening address for the defence, said his learned filend had pai the Issues at point very clearly and it was far the Jury to decide whether or not defendant did authorise Sennelt & Co, to enter into a charler party on his behalf regarding the Skarpano_ Counsel said he would call" defendant and two witnesses to prove that defendant was not a partner in the chartering, but that he had Yeatured on the cargoes. He dhe only knew a tile English and Gresaw the charter party in November, 1846, He never law in October or November, 1895 He knew personally nothing of the troubla between the captain and Sennett in December, 1995. He left the mansgment of the whole maller to Senaeit, He knew 'rothing' of the sub-charler to the Japanese. Knew absolutely nothing about the permit to enter Japanese nen- treaty ports.
