The fighting was very equal, neliber aparently having any advantage at this stage, the wallor's fine fettle enabling him to take plenty of heavy panishment and at the same time to attack with vigour. There was little change in the sixth round, both men spanleg with caution, and the straight lelts of the one and the rights and lefis of the other got home in about equal proportion, It was when Cusack's right came into play that Northcnie's party felt onesty, but the tall man seldom avalled himsell of it. The botri opened the seventh round by spurring for wind. Quick exchanges followed and Cusack used his right more often, one of his blows being a nasly uppercut. Round 8 onened with the altar dropping his right and left on Cusack's head and bad and then he was fought back to the side of the ring, the Army man having matters all his own way. In the next round Cusick landed several times succession on the ether man's apper- works but lia: peared to have no effect whatever, the smaller man fairly surprising all by the wonderful way in which he stood up to the heavy blows and sent in often two or three in exchange. accident happened near the shore he and his driver forta- nately escaped with their lives. To cross the ice-bound lake was by no means an easy task. in traversing the 30 mies from whore, we had to steer a course by compass, and bad to make long détours owing to the dangerous ice co di tions. In many places the flies were several feet in height, and altogether the josiney was a vety rough one.
On January asst I reached Kiakhta on the Russe-Chinese Frontler; where I was laid up for week. On February 17th I proceeded to Stryetenek, which will be the terminus of the Siberian portion of the great railway to Vladi rostock. This portion of the journey occupied a week. Between Chita an? Stryetensk, s rection of the Trans-Balkal Ralway had been completed and trains were running over it. Amar March 5, I made my way to Khabarovsk, the pelitied and military capital of the whole of Eastern Siberia. This stage of 6:0 miles took six days. On March 18 I brought my long drive to an end by reaching Khor, the terminus of the railway from Vladivostock, where I ined the train, and reached the Prelfic coast on March 23, over four months after leaving St Petersburg, The Raislao officials told me that this was the first time a journey throughout Siberia bad been undertaken in the dead of winter.

On March 27 I left Virdivostock la a steamer of the Ruslan Volunteer Fleet for Japan, whence I went to Canada, and came back vía the Canadian Pacid: Raliway, New York and Liberpool, that being the shortest way back to St. Petersburg.
Colonel Waters continued: There are three things I wish to emphasise 1. The extreme cordiality shown to me, travelling as a British Government official by all the Russian Governor-General, Governors, and sobordinate officers during my long journey. From one end of the Ruslan #mpire to the other I was treated more like a Roys! Duke than a humble individas), and made many friends whom I hope to see again. 2. The magnificeal character of the great railway crossing Siberis. 3. The humane treatment extended to all Siberian exiles, whether poli-ical or criminal,
Asked regarding the commercial value of the Trans-Siberian Railway, Colonel Waters rėmarked :-Its commercial value is immense. The Hue will open up both agricultural and mineral resources which for practical purposes are almost lexbaustible. Siberia can produca about every kind of cereal, all sorts of livestock, and it possesses in abundant quantities the more important minerals, precious and otherwisa
Owing to the enormous distances and the cost of transport the Russians have hitherto had no opportunity to place their Siberian predece on great Faropean markets. Bet for years post the suthorities have been gradually, and theseforn permanently, developing the country
The
construction of a rallway through Man- charls will open up a country excendiogly rich in gold and, very valuable from an agricultural point of view. Also it avoids the necessity of an immense détour round the Amar River.

exiled for lasurrecifes, are now la many canes free to return to Russia, and several are employed as Government officials. Political prisoners, unless they have commited some serious non-political crime, are not Imprisoned, their heady are not shaved, and ibey are not fettered. Criminals, on the other hand, are only kept in prison for a short time if of good behaviour. They are then released, having plenty of time to work on their own account and to make money. I can only add that I know—that I am perfectly satisfied that the treatment of all classes of prisonera is remarkably kind, and the sensational stories current in some quarters are absolutely
antige.
Colonel Waters promptly returned to his post. He was to be in tendon for the Jubilee, having been attached by the staff of the Grand Duke Serge, the representative of the Tsar at the festivities in England.
TIENTSIN NOTES.
(From our Correspondent,)
June 181b. From Hankow It is reported in official clicles that Viceroy Chang Chih-inng thought that there was not another like Sheng Taatst, but it is sald that Chang now ibinka that Sherg ought to be a head shorter, and'inme gans for as to say that he has recommended that Sheng should mat be numbered amongst the living, and that Chang Yermo is of the same oplaton,
TAUTAI'S PRICLAMATION,
On the 14th I wrote you to the effect that the Chinese were going to clear out all foreigners The Senior Consol, Mr. S. P. Read, the U.S. Consal, communicated with the Viceroy on the subject, who immediately issued a proclamation which will no doubt be suffalat te queil all contemplated trouble. These proclamations were posted all over the place.
SHEN TAGTAI AGAIN I
In mine of the 8th I wrote ab:ut Sheng Tao. tel and the Belgian Syndicate. It has turned out as I stated. Sheng is a wonderful man. He has, to my knowledge, made and signed three contracts for the money to build the Hanko-Peking line, or the Pantingfoo line as is called, and if it is true that he has signed another with Mr. G. Detring; that will make four. The latter gentleman is now at Peking, I wonder, ont of the your, who wil really find the money, Steng Total is with you, therefore it a much easier for you, to find out than your Tientela correspondent. Send your reporter to interview. I learn be Intends coming here in September next, to try and straighten out matters, for affairs are in a very tangled state at the present moment. Some say he has sent Cap. in Bohr to put matters to rights, sa this gentic man has always been successful; “but I am afraid this matter will prove even too much for him
THE LATEST ABOUT HAILWAYS. Since writing my last I am informed by my native blends a: Peking, that Li Kuog-chang, Chang Yeamob, and Herr G. Deiring bare taken the Hankow-Peking Railway in hand, as also he shanse line and mines. These gentlemen, it is said, are sided by Sir Robert Hatt, If this is true, It will no doubt be a Gnancial success,
A GOLD CURRENCY FOR CHINA.
I am also told from the same gaarter that Sir Roter Hart, His Excellency Li Hungchang. Chang Yenmoh, and Herr G, Delring, bare Iald before the Tsung-il Yamen the necessly of China adepting a gold currency, and that all dues and daffes ought to be paid in. gold. This I am told will be sure to fall through, as well as Herr G .Deuring's and Chang Yenmoh's native oplum scheme, ofs, mo-opoly.
TRADE AND THE RIVER. There is no change to report in Imports and Exports. The state of the river in worse than ever, and there is no prospect of any Improve ment. When the freskets set lo, and it makes things wares then we shall know if the shipping cffcos will have to be removed to Tongka or act, THANKSGIVING BERVICES.
