MRS. CAREW IN HONGKONG.
By the P. & Once Ancona, which arrived this morning from Yokohama, Mrs, E. M. H. Carew, sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of her husband, was a passenger. An efficer from the Britlah Consulata at Yokohama was in charge of the prisoner and he handed her over to the local authorities at about 7 am, to-day. Any- thing like display was wisely avoided, and the prisoner, who was taken ashore without the the slightest ontentation, was lodged la Victoria Gaol long belare most people know that she had arrived here. Those who have seen her say that, so far, she does not seem to show that her incarceration has in any way affected her kenith.

The proposal to engage more Russian officers was made by the acting Minister of War. Hin proposal is to engage 3 officers of the rank of Colonel or Major, as Captains and Lieutenants, 95 non-commissioned officeis, 3 Surgeons and * number of engineers, contracts to be made for fiva yants. The axpense is estimated to amount to 98,000 yen annually.
The proposal was considered by the State Council, where it was opposed by the Minister for Foreign Affairs,
Mr. Kato, the Japanese Ministër, has paid a visit to the Foreign Office and the British Legation, which is supposed to be in connection with a protest against this scheme. He will have an audience of the King this evening.
