The tog gave himself tao much swing, having thrown out no archor to -steady herveli on her moorings. Accordingly abe swung round and krocked against the side of the Mormon, which she sheered along until she slipped by under the stern of the latter. NEW PACIFIC MAIL LINER, President. Huntington, of the Pacific Mall Steamship Co., is reported to have spoken as follows regarding the new steamer which it wa resolved to order at the recent meeling of the director of the Company :-"The matter has been left to our secretary and myself. We want something up to date and a passenger carrier. It must be a larger vessel than the Aritz and a fra2-class crait. It will be of about 8,000 and have twin screws, It will take a year to baslä and may cost $800,coo. We shall not touch aur surplus of $1,500,000 for this, as it is reasonably certain that we can pay for it out of our earn. logs. We shall need $100,000 of our surplus for our dividend of December.int and me much. more for Jane rit next, if the dividend is not more than 'x per cent," The new steamer will probably be of American build,"

A comparison of these figures with Great Britain speaks eloquently for Germany. It shows that England's merchant maring la much larger than that of Germsey, but it shows great development in the marine power of the latter. The increase In tonnage for 1896 promises to be much larger than for any your since 1871, and writers in the "Fatherland" are rejoicing.
