MR. P. SOMMERS, bandmaster of the Royal Englacers, Chaibam, has been appointed to succeed Lieutenant Dan Godher as bandmaster of the Grenadier Guards.
THE REBELLION IN THE PHILIPPINES.
DETAILS OF THE RECENT FIGHTING. The telegraphic news from Saigon published in the Honghong Telegraph of Thursday last with reference to the fighting at Novelets has been confirmed by later Intelligence in the Comercio, which says that on the gib last, the entrenched positions of the rebels at Cavite Viejo and Noveleta, defended by 10,000 men, were attacked by General Rios brigado, supi ported by the warships'of_the_squadron. The engagement was a fiercely contested one and anded in the royal troops gaining possession of the Novelzta'isthmus, and destroying the redout and village of Bencayan and the fortification on the Imus road. The Spanish loss was 35 killed (five officers) and 103 soldiers were wounded, including a staff officer and four others.
ANOTHER ‘ACCOUNT. Private intelligence received by the Esmeralda Is to the affect that the operations really began on the 8th inst, and a somewhat different account is given of the engagement. The rebels armed with Nordenfeldt and other-quick- firing gone are said to have beaten the Spanish troops back with heavy losses. An against the official statement of the Spanish casualties it is said that their wounded totalled 300, while the rebel loss is reported at about 400, but these Agures can only be taken as conjectural, the rebels being in very strong positions. On Wed- nesday, the 11th instant, another assault was. made on Novelets, when the Spaniards were again repulsed, lasing zo men. The papers came out with glowing accounts of Spansah victorias, and in one place it was published that the war ship Castilla had dropped a shell in the public square at Imus, destroying many people.
The is not feasible, reclpg that the vessel was a inile off shore, that Imus was invisible, and that two other towns lay between that place and the ship.
