TRE RISE IN CABLE RATES:
At the present time when we are being "squeezed" in a merciless manner by the Cable Companies it may be well to note what was said at the forty-eighth half- yearly meeting of the Eastern Telegraph Company held on the 23rd July in London, the Marquis of Tweeddale presiding. The Chairman, according to the report received by the French mail to-day, sald the Company was formed. In the year 1872 with a capital of £3,397,000 and they had then a cable mileage of 8,862 nauti- cal knots. The capital now stood at £6,000,000, and their cable mileage had been increased by 17,490 knots, the total now being 25,352 knots. They had paid in the whole period regular quarterly dividends ranging from 5 to 7 per cent.
