for thecrands of Chinese whose ancestors emigrated from the mainland and settled in the "Beautial Isle" regard the island as their home, have considerable Interests at stake there, and could abandon their business and their properties there only at great loss to themselves. Moreover, there are thousands of. Chiasse farmers and labourers la the land who earn #fair livelihood there and who would by no means be sure of success on the densely populated malo land. There will be some hundreds, however, who, dissatisfied with the new-order of thing and puffed up with the ludicrous notion that there is no place on earth like the Celestial Emple and no Ruler so powerful, so beneficent and so wise as the "Son of Heaven," will decline to become subjects of His Imperial Majesty the Emperor of Japan and will therefore saver, once and for ever, their connection with Formoss before the 8th May next. It goes without saying, though, that those who. elect to remala in the island will not only be able to retain that which they cow possess there, but will be given fall and adequate protection for their lives and be property by the Governor-General and bis anbardinates.
