For all the growling and grumbling of Hong, kong merchants that business was never so bad as during the last few years, it is clear that, ifike percentage of profits has diminished, the volume of trade has Increased. Fewer fortunes are made, doubtless, but the trade of the supporting a larger foreign population than ever. It does not need much penstralian, however, to perceive why it is that fortunes in Hongkong are more often made by Chinese than by foreigners. The Chinese even of the better class live in a very simple and expensive fashion.
