The death at New York, on the 11th ultime, of Heary Cayler Banner, the editor of Fuck, from tubercular consumption. is announced in the Felsco Chronicle, which remnika very truly that there were few contributors to periodical literature who enjoyed the reputation held by Mr. Banner, for so many years the versatile, editor of Park. In quaintners of humour, in delicacy of touch, there were none who excelled him, and the short stories such as Mr. Banner called "Short Sixes" constitute in fiction pleasant monopoly. This really great romancer was a man of sti king personality aside from his abilities as a walter, andlit was undoubtedly due to his natural talent as an editor that he made Fuck what it is to-day.

The year 1894 closed with a gloomy outlook politically and commercially. The war-clouds, however, rolled away and trade during 1895 showed agreeably disappointing result. In February China despatched a peace mission to 'ang being sent on a similar mission succeeded Japan. It returned ry infectd's but Li Chung. in negotiating a Treaty, which was signed at Shimonoseki on 17th April and in due course ratified. Under it China had to pay in indemnity of 200 million tiels (about 300 millions sterling) and to cede Formosa and the Lixotung peninsula, up to and including the Treaty port of New chwang, to Japan. Subsequently, owing to representations from Russia, France, and Germany, Lisoting was retroceded in con- sideration of a further payment el 30 million bad closed; this treaty past was therefore tacle. This later Convention was not, however, falfilled till after navigation with Newchwang Japancar possession throughout the trading year and has been treated in the 1895 statistica ass foreign port. The transfer of the value of this trade-though it has as a colt of the taels-from the home to the Fareiga trade makes war fallen from above 8 to below 4 million

In fact, however, this burden has not yet made itself, felt, a loan raised in Europe having enabled China indemnity (one-fourth) and all dee under the to pay the first instalment of the original Laotung Convention. This will only be really felt later, when interest and principal of the los already effecies, sad of those to follow, fall duc. The collection amounts to Hk.
