CONSULAR NOTIFICATION. The following appeared in the S. F. P. 4 m advertisement on the 19th ulto,
The Consulate General of His Most Faithlal Majesty notifies hereby to the Fablic that the concern known as the Japan-Slam Trading Corporation is under official liquidation and requests all creditors and debtors of the asme to present themselves with their accounts at the above-named Consulate to have them examined, from this date to the last day of this month, from ., to 12. A DRAFT ENDORSED "NO FUNDS."
Bangkok, February aoth, The Japan-Slam Trading Corporation, in Liquidation, will, wo are afrild, pay even less than was at frst supposed-ja per cent. : It was | hoped that same funds might be obtained from Hongkong, but only yesterday the Hongkong branch of the Bank of China and Japan returned a draft endorsed "co funds." There will be a meeting of creditors this evening at the Fortu guere Consalsic, a determination which will give, no doubt, general satisfaction.
MIITING OF CREDITORS.
Bangkok, February 2111. A meeting of the creditors of this concern, in liquidation, was held yesterday evening at the Portuguese Consulate, when a statement of affairs-was-made by Mr. Pereira.“It was stated that the bank was practically Mr. de Souza, and had no working capital, and as far as could be learded no connection with any Japanese house, This fact the accused Manager admits, but still Insists that there are certain funds in London, The letter alleged to have been forged, and purporting to came from the Manager of the Bank of Chinx and Japan, might, it was considered, have received only the suspicious impression referred to by careless press-copying. There, however, appears to have been regular business done with the Hongkong, bruach of the Bank of Chlos and Japio, and there is some hope heli ent that there are funds in that branch which may help to swell the poor total of the aarets. The books appear to have been ad. mirably kept, and the accused bas, far as can be learned, obtained litle or nothing for himself. The most extraordinary revelation li the fact of large sums being lent to persons of no means whatever and whose business If wound up could not possibly realis more than a few ticals
Another
· very curiour festure of the case was the confidence with which the accused offered huge sums to ̈residents, and even alleged that the Sameie had a large amount in dollars to the cred of the corporation, and for which be WAI expecting tlcala.
After some desultory discussion of the affairs of the business, it was learned that the Porlagu:se Consul General had acted with great promptitude, and efficially communicated with the different representatives with a view to -calllog in without delay the assets of the defunct. Corporation. It was further decided by the meeting that Mr. "Dowole should be entrusted with the books, and be requested to make out an exact statement of the position of affairs. Accord- Jng to an approximate calculation, necessarily somewhat crude, the figures stand 20,000 Ticals liabilities with 13,000 Ticals possible assets,
GLAD TIDINGS FOR CREDITORS. The Stam Observer saya :-" We are pleased to hear that a number of creditors of this concem are likely to obtain their does after all, a they are contemplating proceeding against the individual finders of the expital. As the corpora- tion is not registered anywhere, and therefore cannot be a limited liability concern, they of course stand a good chance al succeeding."

DR. MORRISON INTERVIEWED.
Dr. Marrison is a traveller who needs no introduction to our readers, since we have pre- ~viously referred to him furneys abroad and to bis unique trip across China which resulted in the issue of that eminently readable book-" An Australian in Colon." During the fortnight that he has been in Bangkok, ays the Stam Observar in lis issue of the azad ultimo, he has, doubtless, gathered's profusion of notes which may some day see the light in the form of an equally interesting volume, although the Doctor insists that he is in Bangkak purely for plaassuro. Bul we know the power of the pen over the hand that has once successfully wielded it, and we hape, when Dr. Morrison comes to sort his noter, that imperious mandate will come to him that. comes from time to time to all those who find they have something to say and have already proved that they know how to say it. Of bis travels outside Yunnan the Observer's repre» sentative asked nothing, as that province is of great interest at the present time.. After these Introductory remarks our Bangkok contemporary continues as follows :
|
idie from want of capital. To make matters sufficient, the plague that raged In Chins some worse, as though the horrors of war were not *** same province. There appears no doubt, says the Doctor, that the Babonic Plagues witsaken from there down the Canton aiver by the Cantonese coolles engaged in the Yunnan trade, and in rerched even Hongkong As the Doctor passed through Yunoan he saw more of the agricultural districts_ihan of any other, and the proportion of fields lacking cultivation was very large.
From this it will be seen that, after all, there can be no paisible reason for the present harry to reach Yunnan. In time, undoubtedly, the population will recover, unless some new visitation fict them, but no rallway carried there under present circumstances is likely to find paying traffic ready to hand.
THE RESOURCES OF YUNNAN.
The next question that arises, then, is as to great. Dr. Morrison says that, in the agricul the resources of the province. These are very
faral districts, three out of every four acres are devoted to the, poppy. The immense areas thrown out of cultivation consist of the vary firest soll, and it is possible to grow such varied food crops as rice, wheat, Indian-cor, beans, and potatoes the last named a small variety something like a sweet potato. Being sub-tropical table-land of high elevation there is no doubt that many other crops could be- raised la similar variety. Turning then to the mineral wealth, there are Impor tant gold mines at Talung, some 13 days' journey southward from Yunnan city. There mest be an abundance of this metal, as it is exported la lurge gastitler Berma in both leaf-form andar Jewellery, The Jewellery la excep. tionally beautiful, so much so that samples of it are proteived in the British Museum, while their silver jewellery, as well as a special kind of enamel they make, is also extremely artistic, The people wear the gold, like the Stamere, perfectly pure and unalloyed. Other metals to be found are tin and slog, while rock-malt also abounds.
to
The exploitation of these minerals by Euro- peans, and the finding of capital for working the fields now lying fellow, would, of course, bo advantageone vil round, and it is possible that eventually the railways would do very well, but it is evident, that, má things are at present, Yunnan is a very much over-rated district. It is hard to give up pleasant Blasions, but it is better to do so before they lead to useless enterprise than afterwards, and Dr. Morrison's fedy of the circumstances on the spot may sUTO. prevent the masing of any farther false hopes, while at the same time pointing out the direction to which enterprise would have to be directed In order to achieve success. dreams of an El Dorado Jest beyond the reach of his actual knowledge, and it is the part of such adventurous spirits aa Dr. Morrison to call us down from our lofty speculations to the hard fact that wealth, wherever it may be, is only to be obtained by hard work, and that no place exists in this world where riches, are to be had for the mere asking.
