*LIFE INSURANCE,
Every man ought to insure his life, and every man who insures ought before he sfects his office to make a careful study, of the Equitable Life Assurance Society of New York, of the guarantees it offers to the assured in the shape of an enormous business, carried on at a minimum of expense, of a large annual surplus and of a reserve fund more than adequate to meet all demands, and safely invested. The Equitable appears to offer, further more, a greater variety of modes in

'Ws would 'remind our readers of the concert to be given at the Theatre Royal this evening by Madamelfelle Victoria Ferry, with the assistan of several leading amateurs, at 9.15. Madamel- rele Ferry comes here with a great continental name, and admirers of the serpentise dance may 'be assured of a treat in her appearance, while the amateurs' parts gives promlio of a pleasing Introduction to the place de resitance. By the Tatsang from Shanghai yesterday, Mr. Herbert Price (of Meters Gards Prica & Co, here, We understand Shirgh) arrived that it is his intention to establish here branch of their wins and spits beálness which in four years bae carned sich cariable reputation In the Model Settlement,- Both Mr. Gande and Mr. Price have had years of experience in the' business and they have pioved up North that strict attention to the desires of their customers still spalis saccess, even in the Far East.
any other office we are acquainted with, with fewer conditions and restrictions. Its forms of policy are so framed as to suit almost every class of man and every size of pocket, so that each shall be anted with that precise form which best accommodates itself to his requirements and to his means. Life Insurance is now-a-days a form of investment equally available for the living and as a provision in case of death. It is far better than any Savings Bank, and its Operations are so conducted in all but the older English offices that loss is almost an impossiblity. We commend to the study of our readers the advertisement on the second page of this issue showing the present position of the Equitable and the Inducements it offers to the public. During last year the Society wrote new policies for a total sum of over £27,500,000, the whole amount for which the Society than five per cent. under two hundred now has policies outstanding being less
millions sterling. Against this, the assets, which amounted to £38,500,000 in 1894, have risen to something under £42,000,000, a gain in one year of over £3,300,000; these assets showing a surplus over the liabilities on the Society's engagements of no less a sm than £8,463,000, again, of £675,000 'over the surplus shown the year before. It is, of course, from the surpius that the bonuses are derived which make the actual results to policy-holders uniformly so much larger than the amounts contracted for in the policies; and, as the Society's advertise-tite in several quarters, ment says, and as our Shanghal morning contemporary very correctly observes, "a large surplus is the best test of strength RASPBERRYADE, &C. and guarantee of future bonuses!!

A DEPLORABLE shooting accident occurred at Swatow on the 27th ulto., by which Mr. Alfred Kinblad, son of the respected Harbour Master. at that port, lost his life. The unfortunate young fellow was, according to the China Gazetie, out shooting in a sampan with two young friends, and was sitting with his rifle, a Winchester, on his knees when the weapon by some unexplained accident went off the bullet entering his right leg above the knee, Travelling upward it came out near the hip. The wound bled profmely and his companions endeavoured as well as they could to arrest the hemorrhage with improvised bandages, and then made their way back to the reillement, about xa miles distant, as quickly su the mampan would travel.
