PROPOSED OCCIDENTAL AND ORIENTAL >XPOSITION.
Tacoma, a-city of yesterday, proposes to hold in 1900 a great Occidental and Oriental exposition." The Tacomans think their city the proper place for such a diaplay, because, as appears from a telegram in a San Francisco paper to hand yesterday, which we give below in its entirety, the greater portion of eastern goods brought Into the United States are landed at Tacoma. A committee of fifty representative business men has been formed and several Oriental nations have been sounded on the subject and are favourably disposed. Congress will be asked of ald the scheme by a grant of money and special privileges, and Tacoma anticipates that in 1900 the greatest display ofOriental goods which has ever been seen In the West. The special telegram referred to, which appeared in the San Francisco Call on the 20th ultimo, reads thus:--

TIENTSIN, Cctober 13th,
It appears from a special telegram in the Chiva Gassits of the 16th last that, the Chinese Government used Its Influence to obtala, the release of the Lyaudet family, who were so long held captives by Tonkin pirates. This calls to mind the published reports of the Lyander's terrible experiences, from which it appears prolly clear that the Chinese officials who hunded the Lyiade's over to the French authorities must have paid the ransom demanded by the brigands. It would be lateresting to know whether the Chinese propose taking active measures to panish the lawless ruffians who appear to "rala to roost" along the southern confines of the vast temitory supposed to be ruled by the Emperor Kwang-in ?

PRESENTATION TO MR. SANGSTER.
A. very interesting ceremony tark place at vean to-day, in the Supreme Court," when the officers of that Court presented Mr. C. F. A. Sangster, who leaves for bome by the Kaiser.
Hind, having by yesssol hard and painstaking serviceo earned his railf:mant en pension, a solla liver ten service. This was a very "andioma lot of Chinese bandwork, and will long serwa to remind the retiring official of the many years he spent in this colony. It was Inscribed "Presented to C. F. A. Sangster, Exquire, by the officers of the Supreme Court, Hongkong, upan his retirement from the service October 1895.
Mr. F. A. Hazeland made the presentation saying that, on behalf of the officers of the Court, he had been requested to present to Mr. Sangster the service as a mark' of their esteem For the courtery and kindness be bad shown them all during the many years they had spent together. They all wished to express their hopes for his Tong life and prosperity in the future, while at las same time expressing their great regret at Sia departure. They then all wished him
on voyage.
Mr. Sangster, in a brief reply, thanked the officers for their kindness, and stated that the only branch of the Government Service he had ever cared for was the Suprema Court. He was only too glad to have the opportunity of thanking all the staff for the valuable assistance they had always given him
the performance of their several duties. The. staff had done their duties on 11 occasions creditably, not only to themselves but to the Government and to the public. He very much regretted, as he had stated as a former occasion, having to retire, but that had to come sooner or latter. Once more ho thanked them hearilly for their kind wishes, and hoped they might all. .... Have increasing prosperity and happiness.
This concluded the very pleasant ceremony.
