NEW WILLARD OPERA CO.
The production of Gilbert's latest comic opers, "His Excellency," by this company on Saturday evening was a very great success, the delines. tions of Messrs. Hall and Courtenay-being eminently find, and the pourtrayal by Misses Howarth and Mowbray all that could be desired, Mr. Hall, as the old Governor whose sole almı in life was the perpetration of practical Joker, was in his glory, the zest and glee with which he plan- ned his coups carrying the entire audience into roars of laughter. The giggle with which he antl cipated the results of his planning was distinctly contagious. Mr. Courtenay was in his proper meter as the Crown Prince disguised as" a travelling actor, and in both parts seted to the life. Merors. Fearnley and Fletcher,
|
as the newly elevated Court-sculptor and physician respectively, assisted In keeping the fan going. Min Howarth cleverly portrayed poor ballad-singer, and very pathetic sho was when occasion required. Mi Mowbray, ax Dams Hecla had a part for which she was eminently fitted, her representation et the fiery tempered old lady being most natural, and her "I'm trying to keep it down" when her anger was aroused, and her sigh when finally suc- cessful, were indeed lifelike." The Misses Booth and Josephs, as the Governor's daughters, added | fun and several pleasing scenes to the whole, the
former making an especially pretty and engaging girl, and singing much better than was expected by the audience. A large number of catchy sira were Introduced, the solos, ducts, trios and chorumen being all mach above the usual high average of the Company, and the verdict was that His Excellency" has been one of the greatest successes attained by this painstaking temps... The Living Pictures which followed, and which were shown then for the last time, ware a very great Improvement on the first exhibi- tion. The lighting
perfect, and the
colouring grouping and only drewback reing, that "there was no softness or 'distance, such as is obtained in the best displays of this class by introducing a curtain of gauza bɔtween the pictures and the Radiance. Are you listening, Clíförd !
From the arguments of counsel it appeared that the estate in question was left by Li Yoen long, the father of the petitioner to his five children, the estate being vented to Li Slog, the defendant, in trust, The matter was further complicated by Li Yuen-tong baving been the exrector of bli father, Li Llang's, estate, which was left to be divided amongst his four children. The estate had been left in the hands of the defendant, a settlement, made In 1984, having been made whereby plaintiff, then 17 er 18 years old, had been assigned a plece of land, with tenements, valued at $4,000 per annum, as a part of his share. The defendant claimed that in agreement had been made whereby the plaintiff had undertaken, in considera:Ion of a certain saus, to forego all farber claim upon the estate. This agreement the plaintiff wisher now to deny or upset, hat as the proper matlon had not been made besore the Court, this was _set_gona_inte
The matter of the need of appointing receiver was then taken up, Mr. Robinson claiming that unless I was shown that the plaintiff had not received his filth share of the estate, or that, the estate was in danger in its present hands, the appifcation had no reason to be brought forward. He claimed that his client was ready and anxious to have “a settlement' as soon as the amount due the plaintiff was arrived at, and had the money at hand to seitle, but he claimed that until the amount of the estate was bettled by the Court, and the amount due the plaintiff decided, It was improper to appoint a receiver, as the defendant was the best person to have charge of the estate, all the other beneficiaries belog Eerfectly satisfied with his administration. Mr. Pallock pressed for a receiver to be appointed, holding that the defendant was endangering the estate and that his private property and the extate property were so rafzed up that until the matter had been thrashed out by a Receiver It
Mould be impossible for his client to recover bis Just don'
The matter was taken under considers- tion by his lordship who, however, remarked that there was not the least suggestion of dishonesty in the matter against the defendant

LATE TELEGRAMS.
LONDON, September 3rd. On zalog Into the Committee on the Indian Estimates in the House of Commons this after Doon, Sir H. Fowler protested againsttbedecision of the Government to retain Chitral. The decision of the late Government, he said, was based' on the advice of Sir Donald Stewart and other officers, who dwelt on the difficulties of building a road which would create a permanent danger Sir Henry said that the late Government bad been advised that occupation would involve an addition of 10,00 men to the Indian army, and ho urged England to keep her word not to take the country.
Mr. Maclean moved the following resolution: -That the House of Commons views with apprehens'oa the continual increase of burdens on Indian taxpayers through annexation; but at the same time, he admitted that the Government must now retain Chitral,
Mr. Bhowaagere seconded the resolution, Walle be approved of the action in Chitral, the resolution would, he wald, show Indians that the House of Commons disfavours farther bardens being placed upon them.
Lord George Hamilton said that though the Indian Government were absolutely ananimous la favour of the occupation of Chitral, Mr. Fowler seat a peremptory order to reverse their policy, and never asked for alternative proposals, The present Government, his lordship said, had largely acted on the views of Lord Lansdowne, and they found if they abandoned Chitral (bey must also abandon Gliġit. The Indian Govern- ment had stated that the occupation would only involve the provision of a few troops for the Intermediate district, and he believed ike reten- lion would only cost thirteen thousand pounds.
Sir W. Harcourt said that the Indian Govern ment despatch of May 8th admitted that the ballding of a road for the defence of the frontier would involve expenses which it was desirable to avoid. The decision of the present Govara despatch merely surmiring that an amicable ment, Sir Willam sald, was based on this agreement with the natives would protect the road.
The resolu ion was eventually negatived, 137 voting against and 28 for it.
September 5th. Balfour,-at-the-closing-of the-Indian-Budget debate last night, arged upon members of the House at to allow the interests of their conallinents to over-tide the interests of the Empire. The country, he said, might trust Lord George Hamilton to execute a policy which would be accepted by both sides of the House ; but it was difficult to remove duties on cotton goode imported into India until something was done to reform the currency. Meanwhile they must be content to insist that no undue favour was shown to Indian maufacturers.
September 6th.
A Unionist bangast was given last night at Holborn Restaurant, in honour of Mr. Bhowauggier, when arɔ gazsin wire present, Including many members of Parliament, Mr. Bhownuggree in replying to bis toast, said the reversal of the Chitral policy of the Liberal Government indicates the strength and foresight of the pretent Government.

On the third count the prisoner pleaded guilty, and was sentenced to four `months' rigorous Imprisonment, the jury Anding a verdict of not guilty, on the other two counts. The Chief Justice, who presided over the Sessions, la passing sentence said :—Prisoner. at the bar-the jury have acquiited you because they are in doubt as to whether this larcar is dead; they are entitled to take a merciful view of the case, and it is not for me to express say oplaton on the verdiet en that point. You have, however, pleaded guilty to causing hurt to this, fascar, and more disgraceful conduct on the part of an Englishman-If you are an Englishman-I do not thing I have ever beard of, You beat and bit in the face this noforinnate lascar, who, you were perfectly well aware, under the circumstances was unable to defend himself, and who, according to the evidence, remonstrated with you and told you that he would complain to the captain, Yon beat him and hit him again. It is true that you are a young man, and it is true that the sentence that I shall pass apan you will madoubtedly be a lesson to you and to others. If the jury. had found you guilty of knocking that man over- board it would have bren a crime the effects of which very neatly approach murder.
