the result of the recent generat election. Happily, LEGAL INTELLIGENCE. we now have in Lerd Salisbury a strong Premier, who is not only supported by a number of able and experiar ced Ministers of State, but has also at his bark the vast majority of the representa tives of the British constituencies.

There is another polat that I would ask for space werǝln to state my idear. I refer to the great complaint, so often heard in Crown Colonies, that Although it is a fundamental principle of British Constita fonal rule that there shall be no taxation without representation, yet British taxpayers in Crown Colonies are not represented at Westminster, and bavo practically no voice in their own affairs. Granted. Then why, seeing that the members of the branches of the Navy League will be able to make them. selves heard at home at least as far as the vitally Important naval affairs of the Empire are concerned, should they not eagerly relze. the opportunity of take a step calculated to advance their best interests by joining the League masse and at once? Surely no hasm cou'd result therefrom, for its actions are, according to its constitution and rules, bound to make for the command of tho sex,"

Yours faithfully,

THE AMERICA CUP RACES. RE THE TOUL IN THE SECOND RACE, TO THE EDITOR OF TAR **Homokoma TrinoRAPH.” SI,I see by your "Extra" to-day that the Defender was given the second race owing to an accident happening at the commencement of the sace. As the Defender contested the race, no doubt bellering she could "whip" the Valkyriz although slightly disabled herself, it seems to me that she should have been made to stand the consequences of such temerity. At all events, it would have shown good taste on the part of the American yachtamén, the ownça of the Defender, if they had elther allowed the second race to go against them, or at least offered to sall it over again. If there had been an andambted foul there could, surely, have been no question, no real necesalty, for a formal protest and elaborate proof.

Yours truly,

YACHTSMAN,

Hongkong, 13th September, 1895. {"Yachtsman "must be fully aware of the Rule# of yacht-raclog. Under those rules the Valkyrie, apparently, lost the second race." And it is abundantly evident from the private information received here to-day that the Defender la far and away the better sloop of the two, in a very light breeze at all events. The Englishmen have got another beating and must “try, try again."—Ed., H.K. Telegraph.)

SUPREME COURT.

(Before Sir Flilding Clarks, Chief Justics, and a Fury)

September 13th.

WONG FUND BHI v. XWAN YUN YAT, The farther hearing of this case was resumed at 10.30 this morning.

Mr. Francis, Q.C., Instructed by Mr. Dennys, appeared for the plaintiff, and Mr. Ha Ka instructed by Mr. Ho Wyton. for the defence.

Several witnesses were called for the defence, after which counsel summed up.

Ht Endship in addressing the jury said he had while hearing the speeches of counsel draftet certain questions for the jury to answer. The first and second were whether the plaintiff signed the deed of astigament, and the memorial; thirdly, was there a bona dás sale of the house; and fourthly, did the plaintiff receive the consideration.

The Jury WA however, asked to give their decision on the first two questions. Hi Lordship thes reviewed the evidence at considerable length, after which the Jury retired, and at 5,10 zeturned and anwered "yes" to all the questions.

In igment for the defendant with costs. His Lordship then called the plaintiff and had interpreted to her that the jury had found that' she had told a string of lies, and His Lordship qette agreed with that finding. If it was not for her (the plaintiff's) family upon whom Hi Lordship did not wish to bring disgrace and trouble, His Lordship sald she would be sent to pilson without hesitation. His Lordship was satisfied that the evidence given by the defence was honest and truthful throughout.
