NAVAL AND MILITARY

A Reater telegram from St. Petersburg sa that the Ironclads Imperator Alexander II. Catherine, 11, Gangut and Lisol Vallby, will shortly be deapaiched to the Pacific Station to take the place of a portion of the Russian Pacific Squadron which is returning home.

Lleat-Colonel Alexander Ewlog, late Staff Paymaster, whose death is sanounced at Taunton, served throughout the campaign of 1860 in the North China, and received the medal. He took part in the operatiis against the Tacpings to the vicinity of Shanghai In 1863, in the taking of the stockade of Nabzlan, and in the capture by escalade of the walled citles of Kahding, Taingpoo, Trollo, and the fortified town of Nabjow.

A French military attache with the Japanese Army says:—"The casualties in the medical, corps during the battles with the Chinese have been enormous, far exceeding the combatant branches." The authority is” unimpeachable, and yet we are told that there is no difficulty to showing that 4 per cent, of the total number kliled and wounded were doctors. Even if the attache were referring to casualties amongst officer only the proportion would still be excessive, but he says expressly, killed and wannded of all grades. "These results," saYI the attache," which leave far behind them the most unfavourable statistics hitherto recorded, are to be attributed exclusively to the long-range arms of modern times."

What may be called the scenario of the Naval mrvres for this year has been published. The fleet will meet for exercises, then separate In two. The Channel fleet wili ga to Berehaven, and the reserve fleet to Lough Swilly. Then each squadron will start to find the other by "means of their scents and cruisers." When the discovery has been made the two will for more exercises. Fleet crolutions, exercises In cruising, formations at night, and in battle formation by day, anchoring and weighing the feel, scoating and distant signalling, and target practice, there will, with one sporting break, be the occupations of the year. It is a builhess- like scheme, and, though less amusing than some others will, we think, be accepted by naval officers as jound,
