DR. AFRES, C.M.G.

We have too often found fault with the editing reports and other official documents Government for suppressing or carefully

to be able, with any grace, to complain of the publication of the Colonial Surgeon's report for 1894 and for the appearance in the Government Gazette of his ill-judged and insulting remarks about his colleagues on the Sanitary Board. We do not complain, but wo do unhesitatingly say that if it had not sulted the Govern- ment to criticise the Sanitary Board and to Justify its recommendations for Its suppression and its treatment of it, and of the unofficial members of It, a very considerable portion of that report would never have been allowed to appear in print; and there is not one single man in the Colony with any knowledge of how things are managedia the Government offices who

As an ordinary member of the Board it was with very considerable dificulty Dr. Ayres could, at dimes, be got to understand what was going on or what was the question before the Board. His remarks, when he made any, were almost always irrelevant, and like King Charle's head in Mr.-Dick's conversation, it was impossible to keep out of his discourse, no matter what the subject, some reference to his famous report of 1874. As Colonia! Surgeon he was for some years past unequal to the duties of his post and to a certain extent entirely in the hands of one or other of his subordinates, and however strong the affectionate regard entertained towards him by a very large circle of friends (and Dr. Ayres had many virtues and made many friends) there are few Indeed, If there are any, who would like to see him back here as Colonial Surgeon. For his own sake he ought not to return. He was fairly past his work. It is an open secret that the ralton d'ir of the late Medical Commission was the well recognised necessity for some change in the organisation of the Medical Department and especially for some im---- provement in the government of it.

We publish in another cloumn a letter | from a valued correspondent on the subject of the Colonial Surgeon's report, to which- we hope to return again.
