SHANGHAI, August 3rd:

We understand that the U.S. Minister at Peking, Colonel Denby, bas appointed the Rev. Spencer Lewis, of Chungking, as the American representative on the Chengta Commission. A better representative of the missionary interest could hardly bave been selected; but Colonel Denby, if he really wanted to make the Commission effective, should have sent as well ble Secretary of Legalisa or, certainly, a Consal-General. The action of Colonel Denby and Sir Nicholas O'Coner looks as if they entirely failed to understand the gravity of the situation, or that it is in their power now to obtain. with firmness, such reparation as would make very unlikely that there would be any more anti-Christian riots.-N. FIVE FOREIGN VESSELS AJHORE AT.

KUCHINGTI.

Nagasaki, July 31st, During Wednesday's typhoon no less than five foreign vessels, four steamers and ans sailing vessel, were driven ashore at Kuchinois. Owing to the breaks in the telegraph wires it was not until some tims afterwards that the news reached Nagasaki, where, luckily, no accidents worthy of mention were reported amongst the shipping. The fire vessels, nahore are the Norwegian steamers Lyderhorn and Widal Zarlsberg, the Bullish steamer Dentala, the British skip Marechal Suchet, and the German stnamer Helena Rickmers. The latter two vastele are the only two which havo apparently sustained any serious damage, the three first mentioned, the Lydirhorn, Jarlsberg, and Bastain, having grounded on a muddy bottom with a gradual Incline. The first two of these vessels had each a hall cargo of coal on board, while the latter was in ballast. Neither of the thres is reported to be making any water,
