chickens and pork, he may puss it on to a soller of crockery, who bands half of it to a tellor and hall to a carpenter, who buy rice with it le a shop whence it goes to Singapore. Another dollar goes to the fish-svakes man; who buys "bimfoo with it, the baraboo wan boyu parangu" at a shep with it, the shopkeeper pays his rent, the landlord pays his tailor the tallar boys cloth and so that dollar goes to Singapore, and thus with the lot, each doing duty several times ove and belog benefit to each person whore hands it passes through. Each one of these persons is thereby enabled to pay tncreased revenue to Government, and as work is increased out of proportion to the value of the first direct payment {:sch dollar remitted from Hongkong in payment for sugar on the average pawing through three bands say, makes a gain to local trade of at least $9000 fnstead of $3,000 only) many fresh Comers would be drawn into the country in addition to the new sugar labourers,
3. Should the estimates as given to me or anything like them work out maarly correct plenty of other mills would be started quickly enough. In this avin a great równy other matters the apathy of the Government is anch that although this fe probably the country in which suger can be put on board ship cheaper than in any other in the world, yet no effon of any kind has ever been made by it to find out the commonest facts for the information of possible #gar producers; the weight of cane per acr cok of working, what price growers can afford to sell at, what price the mill can afford to pay or anything else; all this information at all events would be arguired and if anything like as al factory -1 am told, a large forward movement would be the consequence. The starting of fout such mills would obviate any need for subuldu."
Is worth $irs per acre, for sugar growing. How many acres of sugar land does the Chartered Company poskens?. It would be worth while, even fleur advantages were nuly half what they are, to find out really what sugar land is worth in North Borneo,

But it is not the legitimate work of the Chartered Company to make profits on sugar millis, bot only to do its duty to ilusbareholders by | showing that sugar making is profitable Invert Fockngsury.... ment, and opening the road for others, and | Glamorganshira na da instead of running the mill itself it might be better to tease tend the cane fields. I am told that there are plenty of Chinese to the Strafta and elsewhere who would rent it, fields und all, or arrangements might be come to with one of the Hongkong refineries to take it in hand or even to provide some of the capital.
Even should my Chinese friend be a good deal out in his calculations still the bebeät derived from helping the Horgkong steamer, thereby saving aubildy to that extent, the brisk. ness given to local trade, and the increased revenar would more than counterbalance selling the Petrel at all events, while the Government would be relieved from the reproach of not being ableto ray i word about what-one day will be one of its largest industries.
Should it be thought that getting so pled! mill and planting and upkeeping cane sufficient to keep it going is tan large an operation to commence with-it always being remembered that the policy of the Chartered Co. (If it has a policy, about which I have never seen evidence enough is enable me to judge) is to open the road to others, confining itself to administering the country, without circums iances force le into action Itself-I would suggest the erection of 4, or even a, stons crushers able to turn out plculs of rough sugar a day with a double gang of men esch, and the planting only of sufficient land to keep them going, efforts at same time bel made to Induce setilers to open cane fields on their own sccount ad sell came to the mill, the altimate sim being that as supplies from these neulers increased, so should the number of stono crushers until the mill manager saw fatare sap- ply of cane guaranteed sufficient to warrant him advising the erection of a proper steam craiber. By these means, at no great outlay, the Chartered Co. would provide a means for the sale of the praduçe of small tenant farmers, and would be farming the way to a large extension of the cane planting industry at other people's expense and supervision to the great benefit of the ground landlord, the Hongkong steamer (and thereby of the timber merchant) and of trade generally and of the Revenge account in particular.
I
I have fast seen the account of a Queensland Central Crusher; paying 15/2 per ton for its cane It made a profit for 1891 of 30/8. Another mill paid 14/10 for its cane; with such figures" as there before us surely sugar-making in Borneo ought to pay, as cane bere should not cost $4 a fon.-W. B. Payza In N. B. Herald,

THE "VIBROMETER.". Many of our readers will be interested in a now invention which is being placed upon the market by the Hard Patent Pick Company, of Sheffed. It is called the “Vibrometer," which is described as a new mechanical motion of an elementary character, by motus of which, ascii- lating, shaking, gyrating, and reciprocating machinery can be worked. By its use the following advantages are derived-ibe mechani- harmful vibration is uillised, thus decreasing the power required and increasing output for a given power; the power matred is reduced at least fifty per cent; all the trouble and cost of balancing are rendered completely unnecessary! the cost of construction of machines and appetes for driving them is enormously reduced machines, now rendered unusable by the vibration they cause in mills and other buildings may be worked; the vibration of the floors and walls of mills and buildings can be stopped ; the output of many klods machines may be increased from so to
