colonta! Governorship when so high and han ourable a position was offered him. With regard to himself; be declared that in his position as Governor of Victoris be would spare no effort to advance the material and moral interests of the colopy.

Sir T. Fowell Burton sild he hoped Lord Brassey's appointment would have the result of fostering locreated feelings of loyalty on the part of the colonists. He congratulated Lord Rosebery on bit success in the Derby that day on behalf of the people of the colnales, who were fond of racing.

The Hon. J. G. Ward also spoke, and asked for the cordial support of the Chamber of Com. merce to the Pacific cable and steamablp line. Material aid in such matters as these would afford better proof of the feelings of England towards the colonies, and do more to unite the of Empire than the utterance of any number platitudes. He warned Great Britain that other Countries were striving to divert the trade of the colonies to themselves, and concluded by declar- Ing that his experiences in England bad made him rejoice that he was a member of the British Empire.
