OUR Amoy correspondent writes on the 14th mat. The steamers from Formosa are already bringing over ten in considerable quantities. During the last twelve months the Tamso! camphor trade has largely increased, although it ta stil far from reaching its former extent. The present impetus is due to the demand for manufacture of smokeless gunpowder. ACCORDING to a Siamese contemporary Mr. Becket, acting British Consul at Bangkok, bas had an interview with the Slamese authorities relative to the Ratburl and Pakpale murders (of which particulars have been already published In these columns) and was informed that for the first crime one man has been arrested, and for the other ten are in custody. Wereget to learn that a telegram has feen received from Foochow announcing the death at that port on the 15th Inst. of. Mr. Francis W. White, for many years well and favorably known throughout the Coast Ports of Chias as Commissioner of the Imperial Maritime Castoms. No délails have yet come to hand, but it is believed he must have died very sud- denly and probably from some infectious disesse, as a dispensation for a Masonic funeral was urgently requested by wire from the Hon. C. P. Chater, District Grand Master of Hongkong and South Chins, to take place last Tuesday night Mr. F. W. White was one of the oldest and most popular members of the Imperia! Customs Service, He joined on the 24th August, 1859—nerrly thirty-five years ago, and attained the rank of Commissioner on the sat January, 1866, holding that responsible position for the long period of twenty-eight years, and standing at the head of the liat as Senior Commissioner. A few months ago Mr. White, when in charge at Pakhoi, was unlucky enough, through no direct fault of his own, to get into serious trouble with the Inspector General, which led to his transfer in a subordinate capacity to Foschew, where he bas since remained. It would serve no useful purpose now to enter into the details of the Pakhol scandal, but it can do ao harm to say that we have the best reasons for knowing that Frank White was the victim of contemptible treachery and his own good nature, and in our opinion Sir Robert Hart might, ander sit circumstances, have dealt more lentently with such an old and thoroughly deserving officer. The deceased gentleman, who was well liked by all who knew him, an enthusiastic member of the Masonic brother hood and when stalloned at Canton was W. M. of the Lodge #Sar of Southern China, No. 313, E, C., and Junior Deacon of the District Grand Lodge of Hongkong and South China.
