It is to Doctor RawNIE's report the failure of the water supply, that public attention is particularly directed. Doctor RENNIE attributes the outbreak of the disease to the lengthy drought from which the whole of southern China is at present suffering, and to the accumulations of sewage, and other filth necessarily follow ing a dearth of water. The epidemic broke out in Canton, and so deadly were its effects in the quarters most favourable to its development that the mortality reached as high as 80 per cent. It is now in Hongkong; it has already claimed many victims, and is apparently spreading, Who is to say that it will not prove equally fatal here if remedial measures be not at once taken Portions of China-town reek with filth and many of the streets are now incubating the germs of the ESTABLISHED A.D. 1841.

Tax special correspondent of the Auckland Wally Timer Writes from Jamos as follows A whole army on "strike 15 This appears to be rather sensational news; but it is neverthe- less strictly true. On January roth, the Samaan army, consisting of twenty-five able-bodied men, struck for wiges. The captain, Seaper, had taken his leave before the strike. The army has been without pay for nine months, and an only six men of the rank and file could be paid Intimation from the Treasury Department that La fatore at the rate of five dollars per month, together with the reduction of captain pay to ten dollars per month, regnited in a general strike. Theas men carried away with them twenty-nine Government rifles, and "stated their intention of holding the weapons as security for their arrears of psy. As they passed the king's palace on the march out, they saluted him with a volley of blank cartridges. His Majesty, Malleton I, is said to have, connived at the strike, he sympathizing with the army, s his own salary has not been paid with that regularly and promptness which royalty is accustomed to demand and expect. Since the strike, matters have been amicably adjusted. Sosperi's salary is to be twenty dollem per month; six of the army have been re-enlisted and placed on full pay of five dollars per month, and a number of patriotic soldiers have volunteand their services is a king's guard, without remuneration.
An excellent connert which attracted a large audience, including several officers of the corps, Artillery Thesise, North Barracks, last night, was given by the R. A. M. V. T. at the Royal The programme, if anything, was a tria lengthy, bat the reception accorded the performers testi- fied an eatbuflastic appreciation of their efforts. The ca'ertainment was too lengthy for detailed criticism, but among the best contributors were Gra. Moore, Donachie, Woodman, Mann, Wilson and Erwin; Brs. Brunt, Stone, Rooney, Barnes and C. S. M. Lewis; and Stall-Sergeant Tennant, who presided it the plang. Mr. W. E. INSTANTANEOUS photography has received very important impulse in this latest of Edison's Inventions which says a scientific exchange, is designed to take photographs at the rate of forty six a second. As an Instance of the application of this marvelloar Instrument, a man turning a somersault can be photographed a dizen times while bla banda and feet are off the ground. The strip of gelation on which the photographs are taken is unfolded by electric agency. At every inch, as it la unfolded, the camera opens and shuts again; this occupies one forty-alth of a second, which is as fast as the eye can follow it. The building in which these photographs are taken revolves with the sno so as secure a direct light on the object photographed. Complementary to the kinetograph, and essential to proper ap preciates of its powers, is the kineloscope, in vented by Mr. Edison toexhibit the pictures taken by the kinetograph, by making thempasa before theeye ofthe observer strapidly as theyare taken, For example, if thirty pictures be taken of a man bila in the act of torsing a somasanit, the whole thity succeeding each other in less than a second of time will be exhibited in equally rapid succession in the kinetoscope, conveying the impression that the somersault is actually turned of photographing several figures at the same before the beholder. The instrument is capable time, and consequently of recording a dramatic scene exactly as it occurred. The kinetoscope can be arranged as a nickel-la-the-slot machine - one of the most faterating of its kled.

[L. S.) PROTECTOR OF CHINESE. Dated 5th January, 1894. From all this it would appear that the Daily
Press is not justified in assorting that "it is perfectly well understood in Downing Street that the majority of the Chinese look upon the giving of their signatures to any petition as a mere çt of complacence." If it is so understood in Downing Street, as confidently alleged, then why should the Secretary of Stats bave taken any notice of the petition referred to and have regarded it as coming from "the people" of Hongkong ? It is clear, Sir, that the Secretary of State vlows the Chinese community as something more than a pack of coolies, and recognises that the Chinese constitute one of the leading factors of the Colony's support. That his lordship is right there can be but little doubt; and that is a reason, among many others that I will not now trouble you with, why Chinese interests. should be properly represented in the Legisla- tive Correll of the Colony. At present it is not, and we shall have to see to it that not only sball a line be drawn between educated Chinese and Chloese coolles, which your contemporary seemi to jumble together in a most reckless manner, but that their representation in the Legislature is in reasonable proportion to their contributions templates swimping the Europeans by to the revenue-though, of course, nobody con- allowing the Chinese metobers a majority.
