Fortunately, Mr. J. Barres, who realdes at No. 3a in the same street, hap pened to observe the danger before much dimage had been done, and with a few buckets of water, judiciously applied, succeeded in putting the flames out.
In the Police Court to-day, before Mr. Wode house, two Chinese shop apprentices, fifteen fire to No. 7 Queen's Road West, occupied by years old, were charged with attempting to act Chn Kwok Yang, a shoemaker, on Sunday night. The evidence was to the effect that the master was away, and that one of the boys had a large jos-stick, which was found burning about midnight together with some paper, matches, and shavings, near a box smelling strongly of kerosene, and close to a pile of firewood estimated xt half a ton. The fire was discovered at its commencement by ace of the shopmen, who said gunpowder was also used; no damage was done, however. The premises contained about a thousand dollars' worth of stock-no maation of insurance. The apprentices, having been seen with, the Joss-stick, were at once accused and taken to the palice station, where they admitted the attempt at arson. On being brought before the magistrate they made no statement, and were committed for trial

CASE: The objections to debtor's release were based In first place on alleged concealment of property, namely assets belonging to a firm in which be was a partner, and also a house in the country. The house, however, appeared from the evidence to be merely rented at $3 a year or so for his familly; while on close investigation the supposed assets of the firm tamed out la be practically nothing at all. Perhaps the debtor's declaration a to property was not in proper form, but that was the fault (if any) of the Registrar. There had committed an act of bad faith, in having, was another objecilon raised-hat the debtor prior to his own imprisonment, induced the Registrar of the Court (Mr. Wide) to release from gaol a man who had guaranteed the debts and had been imprisoned in conded tion therewith. Mr. Reece argued that the Registrar had no power to thus set aside a writ of the Supreme Court, whatever flaw there might be la the bond on which it was based. That question, however, could have nothing to do with the debtor; ff had faith could be proved at all, itmust be against the Registrar alone, Mr. Reece bad not shown any just cause why the debtor should be detained further, though his lordably had no sympathy with the man after hearing the evidence, and would detain him if possible; but it could not be done. Still, there were many other creditors, and the defendant would probably soon return to the debtors' prison if any of the other cared to sa him. The present application must be granted and an order for discharge must fisuq.

On the 13th ultimo we pablished a paragraph instancing the dangers attending navigation on the coast in the foggy season and particularly the narrow escape from collision that the Douglas steamer Named and the City of Rio de Janeiro had on the previous day when they met a Ittle to the north of Pedro Blance. In regard toʻthat paragraph, a passenger on board the one of the best known Captains running in and HONGKONG RIFLE ASSOCIATION. City of Rio, a gentleman who, by the by, is out of this part, writes us as follows from Japan :---I have seen the Telegraph's reference to the "close shave" the Rio and the Namon had off Pedro Blanco, and was surprised to learn that our steam whisila had not been heard on the Namoa. The inference of your paragraph was that we had neglected to sound the fog sigual, but the contrary is the case. Captali Smith had been to hours continuously on the bridge when we met, and, much to the annoy. ance of the passengers, he had the whistle going the whole time, There is no doubt whatever bat the density of the fog back in which the vesels met accounts for neither hearing the olber's whistle, for we were of the same opinion about the Named as her peopleapparently formed about ua-viz., that no unnecessary steam had been wasted. However, all's well that ends well and such cases tend to keep "skippers" very mach on the gut vive.
