AMOY NOTES.

(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)

Amay, 16th April, 1894. This is a great reason for tigers in the Amoy district. Thus lar six large ones have been killed andabour fil y cubs captured. The lncrease of igers is the vicinity is probably dee to the six months* drought which has prevailed in Fokien andwhich, by culling short food supplies in the interior, his driven the ferociens denizens of the jungle Iowards the cast.

There was a very heavy squall in Amoy harbour on Thursday the 5th instant, by which four junks and several sampans were upset and one hundred and two Chinese drowned. It was a genuine surprise to old residents when the sampan men of the place went to the rescue of the crews and passengers of the unlucky junks and brought many sufferers in safety to the shore. A new reef of coat at Keiung was recently discovered by the natives, who began to work It for their own benefiton the 2nd lastant. It is maid that the it cal magistrates have prohibited further operations, in addition to punisblog several of the men found with the black diamonda in their position.

The Tamsul gold-fields are proving larger and richer than was generally anticipated. Five coolles, one of whom had worked in the mines in California, la'ely found dry bed about seven miles from Twatutis and took from it over twenty pounds of good dust in a fortnight. Every new discovery confirms the prediction of Mr John Dedd and General Le Gendre that Tamsul would be found to possess the richest "placer", and quartz mines in ite world.

The matter after being talked over by the merchant was referred to the consular representatives, who la due course sent a protest against hulks to the Commissioner of Custom at least the consuls for Great Bekain and Germany did so. Sir D. Macfarlano naked If, in the event of the Government of India agreeing to charge an excise duty on cotton goods manufactured in India, the Secretary of State would went to charge a corresponding import duty on cotton goods imported from the United Kingdom into India.

Mr. Fowler replied that if the Government of India were able to propose a countervalling excise duty on cotton goods manufactured in India, it would, in his opinion, remove the serious objection to the import duty, bat at pre- sent be could only say that such proposal if received would receive the careful consideration of Her Majesty's Government.
