Dr. Hasse, of the Royal Museum, bas just finished preparing a valuable addition to his Natural History collection, in the shape of a young cassowary. The bird was obtained in New Gulpes when a chicken, only about two feet high, by Capt. Lof, of the Drawong, the price being an axe and two tenpenny nails, or something of that sort. Capt. Leff shortly after- wards presented it to Mesurs. Windsor and Co., under whose fostering cire it throve space. It was the terror of all the dogs in the locality, and when one was seen with about half a pound of meat losing from one skle It could safely be assumed that it had been trespassing in the cassowary's compound, With its OWNCTE, however, the bird was amiability itself. Its greatest treat used to be the feed of eggy pro- vided by one of the uaff after tiffin, but the practical Joking of Mr. Lindemann-who delighted in imashing the eggs as they gravitated down its neck caused it after * while to view hen-fruit with auspicion, It got even with its persecutor later however, by swallowing the bigger part of a heap of round ticals which he had left on his deak, together with all b's keys. For some time thereafter the opulent bird was the object of much attention on the part of the coolles, but it gave no encouragement-ludeed it anly developed Its sordid appetite, and took to embestling from beaps of silver belonging to native ellents of the firm, whilst they were being counted out at the office door. The curions part of the business is --perhaps on sccount of the fall in exchange only a few salungs and cents (and of course the keys) were found in its stomach at the past-ights of our Government at Peking, and could mortem. For two long years the cassowary stalked about the wharf in dignified solltude, listening to the jingle of its banking account, and taking toll of the orange-hawkers and sugar- cane sellers, and then itï end came.
But qur great and shiolog statesman in the Nagaki office of Secretary of State consorts with the Chinese Minister for the purpose of making a joint law in relaion to the most important............... question which California and the Paclic States bave to deal with. Any law bearing upon it we expect to have passed by our Congress and not 2y two men in a back room, one of whom is a Foreign Minister. It le tree that their work, alphong... to receive the sanction of the Government and whatever it may be, la only suggestive. It has the approval of two-thirds of a quorum of the Senate. But the work is secret, is usually not open to public discussion, and in most cases in brought to a successful fisuo. As an illustration of the manner in which the Secretary of State conelders the case, it is reported that he recently Informed one of our Congressmen, it is supposed with an air of triumph, that the Chinese Minister bad agreed to allow the law of the United States in relation to registration to stand,
It suffered from obliquity of vision, physically as well as morally, and could only see in front. Therefore when it started to explore the Borneo Co.'s premises it fell of a plank into the creck. It swam straight off into the middle of the river before it got its bearings, and could start for the shore. It became chang hong-thought Itaeli a awan, and used to go racing sampans, The last time it failed to take the necessary observations, and It is supposed to have either swat straight up and down until it died of starvation, or to have fillen a victim to a jealous sampan-man. Any how it was found toes upwards near the shore the other day, with the five pin-feathers which it regarded as wings carefully pulled out.
The autopsy yielded about six per cent, on the

There is no allegation that Mr. Gresham felt say humiliation in making the statement. The treaty-making power of Weather the President and the Senate does not extend to all issues that may come up. There can be no mixture of local legislation in them, for anything of that kind is not only i surrender of some part of our sovereignty, but a usurpation of the powers of Congress.
