intelligent actor, besides it bores one homibly. It makes the scenes too long and condicts with the running smoothness of the play. Mr. Harding's trouble is rgotiam heavily leavened with nervousness. Confidence is an essential quality in the composition of the successful actor but self-conscloamess is a handicap too heavy to carry. On the stage Mr. Harding is | good both in "The Brothers" and in "The Guardsman," but as Sir Hairente Shortleigh he was certainly a misfit, Mr. Kitts as Mr. Rum- ford was a disappointment after his playing In "Liberty Hall." He many times forgot his lines and the character he wassupposed to impersonate that of a lively but still respectable clilzen, and resorted to clownishness and the "whip-up's " of the lowest of low comedians. His make up was the only commendable feature in his performance. The less said of Mr. Mallett's Fred Flutter the better ; be la a fairly good actor but is always given such meagre parts, that he has not half a "show "Laat övenlug bo was just a bit of useful portable furniture; always polished and in faly form-but nothing more, Mrs, Brisp, talented lady that she is, was admirable In the mall part of the Princess, but Mlas Marle Brian as Countess Asteriskí did not rise to her usual high standard—and small wonder. She was evidently fatigued, but as usual was scrupulously correct in the details of dress, but this clever young comedianna is far too talented for such an inane put as that of a "walking lady" Miss Gregor with her Kate Greenaway face and esthetic figure and dressing made a passable picture part of Dora Stuart. Miss Gregor's abilities would justly, her in discarding the shrill high tones the adopts and trying more solld threaty ones. Prince at Monte Carlo, Mr. Nunn has a fine conception of eccentric comedy and never falls to make a bit. Mr. Verner an the Baron out-did himself, and bin föterpretation of the character proved him to be a thorough student of human nature. Miss Tasselll was so ideal Dobson. The last but by no means least to be spoken of is Miss Stella Leigh as Mrs. Rum- ford. This young lady belongs decidedly to the new school of seling she knows .bow 'to 'use her hands and arms without the "wooden doll" effect. Her gestures are graceful and always seen to come out lacerely and clearly cut, showing much originailty, As Mrs. Rumford she did some clever basiness; her asides kept the audience constantly on the

THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, FRIDAY, MARCH 9, 1894.

A BRITISH DOLLAR,

The following letter written by Mr. J. B. Lee, agent of the Chaiten d Bank of India, Australia and China at Penang, has appeared in the Pinang Ganetta 2-

Fit The subj.ct on which I wentque to address you is one that has been before the public for a considerable time. The question arose some years ago, bat was dropped; it has, however, come up again prominenily since the memorable 26th June last, the date of the closing of the Mints by the Government of India to the free colorge of rupees, and I think we may say the birthday of one of the greatest financial dascos that the world has known in modern times, only to be equalled, perhaps, by the passing of the. Sherman Act in the United States in 1890.

I mention the Sherman Act and the closing of the Indian Mints because they are so closely connected with, and have been so largely responsible for, the necessity we now feel, namely the introduction of a good, sound, reliable and sufficient currency for the Straits and Hongkong, The threatened repeal of the Sherman Act bas- toned the Indian Government to, as it considered, * pat fta house in order,” but as it turns out, and

We now know, and may well profit by this latest lesson in “tinkering with currency" from "value" point of view. But very different is the question before us now. In advocating the introduction of a British dollar I wish to be understood as leaving ent of the question altogether any idea of attempting to fix lis value as regards gold, or even steadying it. These are ends which to my opinion can only be at tained by bimetallism--and when I say bime taillem I mean univerzal bimetalliam based upon international agreement, If a country

such as India attempts to check the ordi- mary courae of its finance by Gring exchange at an artificial and unreal level and value its trade mar bear the brunt, and we have already seen that, after eight months of experiment, Indla's former large favourable balance of trade has been turned into an adverze slate of affairs, and that the balance of trade is 'against India at the present moment. All such ideas, therefore, 1 meddling with the value of the dollar are absolutely omitted from my arguments, But to come to the point, what I wish to advocate, as I have already said, is the introduction of a

dollar following the fortunes, good or bad, of silver, exactly of the same weight and fineness as the Mexican dollar, beating the impress of the Queen's head, which I believe to be sufficient to carry it almost anywhere on the content, and probably to be known as die "British dollar,”

The circumstances under which the Mexican finds its way to the London market are known to all of us, and if the exchange between Mexico and London refuses to respond to the fall is sliver It follows as a matter of certainty that Mexico's
