I may mention, that this stock of material has been carried forward at its original cost, and as a large portion of it was laid down here when the dollar was worth over 38., it now represents a most valuable asset of our company and enables us to serve our customers on very moderate terms. do not think that I have anything further to add to the Report and Accounts, but before proposing their adoptios, I shall be glad to answer any questions which you may wish to put with reference to the sand.

Did you bear any suggestion to lower a boat ? -No; I thought of it myself, but thought wa could not do it.
I
Could you get may nearer to her? No; once noticed we were already dangerously véár.
But you said before that you never saw her again after golog for the captain-I don't remember saying that; I certainly did see her, a Hittle forward on our starboard beam certainly
near enough to bail.
The President-Then why did you not hall? It was not my place.
Capt. Hill:-Net your place? Were you not la charge of the deck prior to the colilstorf-Yes. A Chloere quartermaster, who was at the wheel at the time of the collision, said ko JAW 1 light on the port bow, a long way off. Then the second officer gave the order "hard-a-part." Witness never saw any side-lights on the other steamer, orly a mast-head light, Witnest was attending to the compass all the time, and could EO: really give any information of any use.
John Bourne, chief officer of the Hongchow, with master's certificate 762, Hongkong, 189, said :—I was not on deck at the time of collision 1 was asleep, but was aroused by the engines going astero. There was a strong monsoon and high re. I went straight the fore peak to sound; on the way I saw the other vertel on the starboard bow, but beyond nolicing that she was a steamer I hardly looked at her. She was qui'ee ship's length off. I had felt the impact of collision, but YY lightly, directly after the engines went artern, After sounding the fore-peak and getting back went back to the captain, 20 or 25 minutes frore. the collision; the other steamer was on our star- beard beam, just then burning a blue Hght. We repiled with another. I saw her funnel while the light was burning; it seemed light-coloured. Did not notice it again.
The President: The mystery is as to what became of the other ship, and that is just the polat on which unfortunately we cannot get any folormation at all from arybody; they all saw lights, but did not take the trouble to lock what became of them. Did you watch the light til it disappeared, or did you go away?-I went away; I had to attend to my duties in the fore peak.
The President -Yes, everybody appears to have been doing something else i Dia you have any consultation with the captain about the other vessel ?-Yer; be, asked me what I thought bad become of her, and I said I thought she had steamed away, We cruised About a bit but saw nothing.
Well, but can you say whether everything was done, or what was done to help the other abip We stood by for two hours, as near as possible to the place of the collision.
But what steps did you take to find out about her? It is not much use you staying four lengths off if you don't look what is happening with the her ship. The cxplain asked me about lower ing a boat, but we simply couldn't see anything to lower a boat for.
