I am quite safe in saying that no London

fodging-house in "the Diala" was ever moro prolific of the disturbing element than the high class accommodation provided by the Mount McDonald Arms.

The dreary rain that witnessed our departure from Sydney, greeted our arrival at the Mount, and it was not much of a solace to learn that the weather was by no meana unusual for the time of the year, and that it was very unlikely to change for the next few weeks. And here let me at once aderit that, from reliable information received after my return to Sydney, the weather prophe's were right in their predictions. Hope- fently giving up the Hea of ever being able to verture nut and keep dry, I lost no time in visting the Balmoral mine and, as far as was pas inle, accomplishing the object of my visit. The conclusions I arrived at both from personal observation and from inquiries made in every direction where reliable information was like'y to be obtained, do not amount to a very great deal and their value may be ques lonable but stall events the shareholders of the Balmoral Mining Co, w'I be inte en'ed le know something from independent source regarding the properly,

The alleged gold-field is situated on the Aber. cromble ringes, about thirty miles from the town of Carcoat. The country is very rugged and mountaincus and distinctly unfavorable to extensive alluvial auriferous depoilta; but a perfect re-work of quar veins are met with In all directlon.. So far the workings are confined to quarit mining, the principal veins in the district bring the B imoral, Queen of the Mount, Grant's Amalgamated, and several others. Without entering into the geological details supplied to me ty experts, it la sufficient to aention that the gold which is generally fine in this district, is ever ly distributed through the qua 12, there being also a total absence of what miners term cleavage, or face gold. This accounts for the cushing yielding higher returns than is indicated by the outside appearances of the quariz.

First, as to the author-Mr. W. S. Gilbert,

Many of his works have attained a popularity which is simply colossal, while other productions from the same facile pen have reached an equally colossal waste-paper basket. "Princess Toto" was thrown in the latter direction, but jest missed; that is toway, it struggled into publicity

for a moment, but was not accorded much of a welcome, and so is only just a peg shove the rank of oblivion. The only reason we can see for its fallure is that Gilbert's satire is often too subtle for “the million "; as with Artemus Ward, clever bits fallow each other so quickly that the ordinary intellect misses half of them. Artemas learnt the necessity of carefully labelling each #goak," so as to save people the trouble of keep. lng on the alert. Gilbert, with magnificent cynicism, continued to supply the public alternately with "easy jokes" and deeper ones, and to enjoy his own joke on the people who could not twig" quickly enough.

Mr. H. W. Sce, Inspector of Mines for the New South Wale. Government, pild an official visit to Mount M. He pays "The Balmoral is a distinct line of reef from the Queen of the Mount Several hundred tons of quartz were crushed from this reef averaging fully two ounces perton. There are several other mines wakig with fair prospects of success. The fallowing is the quarts crushing power on the field Balmoral Gold Mising Co., ro-head, Colbert's 8 head, Pascoe's 12-head, Creighton's 25-head, and the Mining Investment Association 20 head batteries, making a total of 75-head and 100 horse-power. This experditare of capital in quartz-crashing machinery proves that capita lists have faith in the permanency of the Mount McDonald gold field, and when taking into consideration the georgical formation, the nature of the quality, and the depth of some of those mines, already attained," do other con- clusion can be arrived at than that the Mount McDonnid gold-field will rank among the per-watch-chals to play with when not otherwise manent recñag divricts of New South Wales. There is also a large tract of auriferous country within a few miles of Mount McDonald, which, if once developed, wil add to the jettlement of

permanent mining populuiɔ0,"

The conditions of the Balmoral Co.properties mentioned in the foregoing extract still exist, and shareholders can rest assured that, whatever may be the actual paying prospects of the con- cers, the mine is Deuber a wild-cat business nor ***lied" fraud, in the feases which comprise "the Balmoral" the reefs are not so clearly defined as in the Queen of the Mount " and "Eureka," and the country la of a much harder nature. Only the most experienced miner CAD discern coantry rock from the reef, and it was represented to me that this fact to a great extent explains the low returns realised before work at the mtoe was stopped. Owing to inexperienced manavement great quanilty of rock was put through the mill with the reef quariz, the cost of picking preventing any attempt at separation belog mide.
