the clerk of the weather could not be blamed for it; it was sunny and cloudy alternately, but there was never any disagreeable glare and a light air from the south-east made the temperature delightful. There was the newal crowd of Chinamen all round the Course, and fairly large gathering of foreigners at the Grand Stand, but there did not seem to be so many ladies
present as we have sometimes seen. There is often this falllog-off on the second day and the lawn and rails will no doubt be crowded to-morrow. The racing was distinctly good and
Part Mutuel Freedom 95, Congo By, Snow- there were several large fields. The wins were Bat so much divided as on Monday, Mr. John, Surveling 24, Au Revolt 33.—Tota! Peel and Mr. Ứio taking two, Mr. Sassoon
stam$1,550. taking two and to both cases being himself In the saddie, and Mesars. Ring, Trebau, and Toeg one each. Mr. Sasacon's most popular win was on Zephyr, carrying the crushing weight of rst, lb, and whose success was very '09+ expected. To judge by the cheesing, all the victories were popular, and even those who com- plained most of the isck of excitement must have been satisfied with the result of the race for the Shangbal Stakes. Seven pentes went out to try and wrest his almost unbeaten hanours from Hero, and with success. Flashlight, ridden by Mr. Crawford, held him for the first half of the race and prevented als getting the ralis, and this seemed to take the heart out of bim, and he allowed Vagrant and Bavill to pass him. The excitement as the poles came down the straight when it was seen that Hero was besten, was almost unparalleled, and the victory of the Blue and Silver was received with the wildest cheen. Great favourite as Hero was, there was an undercurrent of opinion that Bovill might beat him; bat so little wan Vagrant's chance faneled, ibat out e of 360 chances is the Fari Mutuel, only five were taken on bim, three of them, we believe, by Chinese Mr. Midwood, who roce Vagrant in this race, was enthusiastically cheered, but with it all there was much symp thy with Mr. Sassoon fa the defeat of his champion pony. The victory of Mr. Meyeink on his own pany in the last race was very heartlly acclaimed. The times were good, although so far no records have been broken, The Pari Mutoel was agala most liberally patronised by the public.
The details of the day's racing areas follows:

Mr. Renny O It is difficult to adequately describe the excite usual, after a preliminary break away, Hers mont with which this race was followed. As started off with a slight lead holly pursued, by Vagrant, Flashlight, and Talleman, order they raced by the Stand for the first time and at the Loongfel gate Flashlight, which had the rails, Hero being outside, had got into second. place, with Bavril third. These were very close iogether with Vagrant just behind. As ther passed the half mile post Vagrant came out with magnificent rush, and it was then seen that Hera was in distress, for Bovril and Talleman were pressing him closely. At the Monument Bovril in attendance. Coming into the straight Vagrant beaded Here and went to the front with Hero again struggled for the lead, bat unsuccess fally, and amidst a scene of the greatest excite from Bovril, Hero being a bad third Talliman ment Vagrant romped home several lengths

had set their hopes, as one way la drivs out the bated foreign merchant, wers about half-a-mila beyond the limits of the Sanilement, well isolated from all other buildings, and so safe enough from the ordinary house-fires. It was also furnished with a fire engine of its own, with water in abun dance. The managing director, Yang Tao-isi, arabid anti-foreign ignoramus, thought to do a fine thing by pocketing the insurance some 5,000 or 6,000 tele-and he also made a good deal of money by charging the operatives far too much for their keep; consequently he was thoroughly hated. When the fire broke out, bis mes made no effort to help him in sering the property; he was too ronceited to ask the help they would not have come, remembering the last of the Volunteer Fire Brigade, and probably time when they were refused admission into the City to save life and property.
· It is rumoured that the owners are proposing 10 put up new mill in any sort of a way they Ca, and do all the trade they may until another fire breaks out-but be well insured this time view from Wednesday, the 8th inatent
and then they may have money enough to foreigners, there was only one left about the rebuild the place properly! Fortunately for the
place.
