There are nearly 12,000 of these cells. Hera every three years aspirants for an official cancer are submitted to an examination. Out of, per- haps, 8,000 competitors no more than 300 dually pass. Students take pen, ink and paper with them, nothing else. They are closely searched; to find a book or a memorandum, or to attempt to communicate

any one during the examination, means disgrace, and the delinquent is never again admitted to competition.

The examination begins on the eighth day of the eighth moon and occupies three sessions of three days each. The same text is given to all at daylight; the essay must be handed in the next. morning then the candidates may leave the: hall, returning twenty-four hours later for the next essay. In a recent competition only 130 passed at the final trial, and these are booked for pros motion in civil offices, but even these must first go to Peking to compete for the third degree. The Canton examination is for the second degree.
