SAYS the Siratis Times of the 5th Inst.—Mr. Bibby, the mining manager of the Ranb Australian Gold Company, Arrived here this merning with 2479 ounces of smelted gold, the result of shout four months crushing. Mr. Bibby speaks very hapafelly of the prospects of Raub, and says that at the end of the year there will be another good shipment of gold. The surveys and all detalls for the proposed electric plant have been finished for some time; but antil Bukit Komaa has been farther tested, Mr. Bibby is not anxious to get forward with the work connected with the electric installation, Bukit Koman is the largest of the old workings on the Haub concession and, according to the trials gone so far, it promises to be a deld that will eclipse anything yet done at Raub, Mr. Bibby asserts that an electric installation would effect saving of thiry-five or forty per cent, an the total expenses at the mlae; or, by another way of puiting it, the electric plant would retum from
filty
to hundred per cent, on the cost wounded,
one of its construction. We are given to understand that the primary cost of such a plant would be within the value of the present shipment of gold. Regarding the recent attempted robbery at Raub, it may be mentioned that all the valuables belonging to the Company are kept in the battery and guarded at right time by two Sikhs armed with loaded rifles The prospects at Raub continue to be good.
THAT genial xnent of the manly art of self- defence, Mr. Bly Waters to wit, would seem to have been on the war-path at an athletle touran- ment elven under his management at the Lyceum Theatre, Shangaat, on the evening of Saturday the 7th Inst. There was a large audience and the variety entertaloment provided in aid to have given every satisfaction, but the pièce de résistance was a four, round bout with the gloves between Mr. Waters and Thompson of H.M.S. Caroline, Professor which had been looked forward to with great interest by the supporters of both gladiators. The pair had met in battle array at a previous show held at Chang-Su-ho's well | known gardens, when some experts expressed the epirion that the British man-of-war had the beter of the doughty middle-weight champion of Belilah Columbia, and Thompson bimself is credited with having said that if he had folly extended bimself be could easily have pulverised the professional Boasting is not a desirable accomplishmentur der the most favorable circum stances, but when a amateur at any sport of pavtime, and more especially at pugilism or billiards, claims to be able to wabs round' a "pro" be simply writes himself down an egregious ass. And this is what "Professor" Thompson did, an was very quickly shown when "time" was called. It was at once see that Waters meant mischief,, and feint ing for an opening he smashed in the right, knocking his opponent cat and nearly ever the sopes in the short space of thtrisen seconds.
The severty of the blow may be gauged from the fact that two small bones of Waters' right hand were found to have been broken. There was some hissing at this business-ilke "Kanck-out, and in consequence Billy came forward and explained that he had professional reputation to maintain, and after what had been said about Thompson being the belter me, he had been compelled to demonstrate that on the preplous occasion when they boxed he was only playing with dim,

It is officially denied that Russia latends to Issue 4-per-cent loan in France about the Ume the Rarsisa fleet-vitite Toulon. Reports are circulated here to the effect that the Czar displeased at the extra demonstrative manner in which it is proposed to welcome the Russian officers and sailors who are to visit Paris, and an intimation of this description is sald to have been unofficially communicated to the French Government.
There are people who claim that the official dental of the Government's intention to lasse a new loan is due to an eu'cry made by certain French papers against the loan, reminding the people that a similar financial move was attempted when the French were worked up to a state of enthusiatm by the virit of the French squidios to Cronstad, and this killed mil chance of the loan being reccers'ully floated.

"I am willing to fight nywhere, but if there Is any preference I should prefer to fight before the Crescent City Athletic Club of New Orleans, but I understand that the club is insolvent. I signed articles with the provision that should any club offer more than that amount I could accept the offer. Since sigolog I have learned that the club has become insolvent, but I am at willing to fight there. If President Noel ways he will put up a sufficient parse, guaranteed by the club. I will accept.
"I want to say that the Coney Island Athletic Club people have not used me squarely. Evidently they thought all that was necessary to bind the match was to secure the signature of Corbett. In England it always takes two to make a match, and I can't see why it should differ here. I did not receive the articles of agreement from the Coney Island Club, offering a $40,000 parie, antil five weeks ago. I did not sign them, and bave not signed them. When they are ready to treat me squarely and fairly, why then something may be done."

RECOVERY OF CAPT. C-OWLIE'S BODY. The Canton agents for the steamers belonging to the Chinese Engineering and Mining Comit pany, of which the Ching-ping is one, arn to be commended for their exertions in connection with abs recent and fatality on board that vessel As soon as the disappearance of Capt. Crowlis, whlie en voyage from Hongkong to Canton on the night of the 11th iol, was made known, diligent search for the body was instituted and a subsizntial reward offered for its recovery. But promptly as the Agents acted the search was a fruitless one until yesterday, when news reached Canton about one o'clock in the after moon that the body had been found by a Chinese fisherman on Tiger Island, and that it had been removed to his boat. A steam.launch was at once despatched to the Bocca Tigris to find the boat and convey the body to Caulp, where the flags at the Consulates, Customs, and on the ateamers in port were flying half-mast."
The steam-launch, with the fishing boat in tow containing Capt. Crowlle's body, was mat by the Pasig last evening at about half-past seven o'clock, a little above the Calcutta shoal
It was ascertained from the Chinesa who brought up the first Intelligence of the recovery of the body that there were no bruises or other marks upon it, and that all the jewellery, money and papers which the unfortunate man had about him when he went overboard were intact -even to a gold scari-pla which be worn.
An inquest was held on the body at the British Consulate to-day, but full párriculars will not be available here until after the arrival
of the Fatshon from Canton to-morrow morning,
