The situation in South Wales, owing to the coal strike, is not improved. Great military and police precautions have been taken to protect the collleries and working miners. The desperate measures which the med bare taken leader te COSTCO Owners were shown yesterday, when a body of strikers endeavoured to stop work in the colliery, which supplies the Pontypridd Gas Works, in order to put the town in durkness,
The district has the appearance of being in state of slege. Sentinels are stationed around the collieries in order to announce the approach of strikers to the troops. The police are guard. ing the collieries, of which less than twenty out of twenty-four are now working, these being chiefly in the Ebbw Vale district, and the strikers announce their intention of marching there on Monday 50,000 strong to stop the work.
It is elmated that the men have already lost £300,005 in wages, while the output of the colltextes han fallen off. In the Midlands, where nearly half a million miners are striking, a more peaceful situation prevails.
The seriousneks of the situation'dan ħe Judged by the fact that coal owners asked for 2,000 infantry and 1,000 cavalry to protect the collleries and working colliers. Over, yco infantry left Plymouth in trains for Rhondda valley, and too others will proceed to-day.

The riots in Ebbw Vale, where the invading strikers got a sound drabbing from the natives who desired to work, are only too likely to be renewed on a larger scale on Monday, unless a heavy military force is sent. In x number of the towns there is a threatened failure of the gan supply within another fortnight, and the lösa from the stoppage of the manufactories in becoming very grave.
It is an ill wind, however, that blows nobody good, and the great nerthem coal fields of Northumberland and Duchem, which have cut loose from the present strike, see their parts of Newcastle and 'Shields bumming with unpre cedented energy, and Tyne's harbors and decks are crowded with colliery shipping.
ROME, August 20th, The anti-French agitation, started lo conse- quence of the massacre of Italians at Algues- Mortes, is spreading hourly. BERLIN, August 20th, The relations between France and Italy are
regarded here with considerable anxiety to view of the pepulir demonstrations against the' French in Italian cities. Stace the massacre at Aigues-Mories, the hostility displayed by the Italian agitators is believed to threaten very grave consequences, as it will trellate the French Government. There is even a possibility of a French-Italian war, and Germany's obligations under the triple-alliance treaty in such an event are generally discussed.
